The BikeNZ Napier Commuter Challenge starts on Monday – are you ready for the challenge?

There is nothing worse than rushing on a Monday morning - forgetting important stuff and having to rush out the door in a state. It may take a little longer to cycle to work, so remember to be well planned and prepared in advance. See the below tips. This helps take the stress out of it and make it more relaxing on your ride.

• Remember to pack your work clothes for when you arrive, if you‘re not biking in your work clothes and need to shower and change at work. Even leave a set of clothes or shoes at work.

• Get your bike and gear all ready to go. Check things like your bike, lock, helmet, shoes, drink bottle, gloves, spare tube and tyre levers are all ready to go. So all you need to do in the morning is ride your bike.

• Check your bike, your bike should be safe and ready to ride. Make sure you have the legal rear reflector, so you can be seen and your brakes are working. Check your tyre pressure is correct. There is a lot more resistance when riding if it’s not correct, so make sure it is to ensure an easier ride. You can find the correct PSI (Pressure per Square Inch) on your tyre wall, tyres can vary so remember to check.

• Plan your route prior the day before. Check out the best ‘cycle corridors’ to use from where you live to where you work. Its where lots of cyclists ride, so safer, its cycle friendly and its easy. I tried a cycle pathway/corridor in Auckland yesterday, from out west all the way into town – oops city centre – fantastic off road cycling and it was very well used by commuters.

• Make sure you wear bright clothing or a fluro back-pac cover so you are easily seen by other road users.

• If new to commuting maybe find someone to cycle with from work, till you are confident.

Check out the attached calendar to see where you need to go to on Monday. Inspire a mate to try! Yes, this year we are kicking off on Monday at MP Chris Tremain’s Office, Station Street, Napier. Hayden from Kathmandu has also kindly offered a spot prize so see you all there from 7am to 8.30am. See you all then!

Remember the 2011 BikeNZ Napier Commuter Challenge starts on Monday 31st October and runs to Friday Nov 4th. No need to pre-register, just register your name with Vicki at the breakfast each morning. Ride in between 7am and 8.30am each day and register. Receive a breakfast treat from your fantastic supporting business or organisation and there is a daily prize draw too. The calendar can be downloaded from http://www.sporthb.net.nz/

To be in the draw for this Grand prize you have to have ridden and registered for 4 out of 5 days. The Grand Prize is a weekend in Taupo with the opportunity to ride part of the NZ Cycle Trails. The prize is a luxury nights’ accommodation, dinner and breakfast, at Bayview Wairakei Resort, Taupo!

Olympic riders join Calder Stewart for Tour of Southland

Olympic cyclists Hayden Roulston, Marc Ryan and Sam Bewley spearhead a powerful team for Calder Stewart - BikeNZ in this year's Tour of Southland which starts in Invercargill next week.

The three Olympians will be well supported by Jeremy Vennell, Jason Allen and Jason Christie in an impressive line-up at one of New Zealand's iconic sporting events.

Roulston, the current New Zealand Road Champion, comes off a busy season with the HTC Highroad Pro team and will be aiming to win the Tour of Southland for a phenomenal fifth time in just six years, second on the all-time winner's list behind the legendary Brian Fowler.

He has recently confirmed his future with a yet unnamed European cycling team and is looking forward to riding an aggressive Tour.

"I always love racing on home soil as I gives me a chance to stay in touch with my fans. I feel like I'm in top shape and in the right frame of mind to go back and win a fifth. I have clearly got a super strong, really well rounded team beside me too".

Ryan has also enjoyed a full season racing in Belgium with some good results while also picking up a number of top results in New Zealand.

Meanwhile 24 year old Bewley has had a successful and busy season riding for the ever powerful Radioshack team and is in solid form ahead of the tour. Vennell rides for the USA based Bissell Pro Cycling Team and has some excellent performances to his name this year.

Thirty year old Allen has been racing nationally for the Subway Pro cycling team and Christie, the current Under 23 New Zealand Time Trial Champion. Christie was sixth at the Under 23 World Time Trial Championship has had an excellent season, including racing successfully in Belgium

The 55th Tour of Southland begins with the prologue next Sunday before 900kms of racing over eight stages around the region finishing on Saturday 5 November.

This race is a “2-Up Team Time Trial”

You will race one time around the Valley-Raukawa Circuit with a team-mate.

Only two people per team.

The time will be taken on the second person to cross the line, so work together to ensure you don’t leave your team-mate behind.

There is no need to pre-register for this event – just turn up on the day.

If you don’t have a team-mate, you should be able to find one at the venue on Saturday.

Normal time-trial rules apply regarding drafting (although, of course, you may draft with your team-mate).

Congratulations Wills!!!

William Green also medalled at the recent NZ Secondary Schools Championships, getting a bronze in the Under 16 boys points race. Well done Reg and Wills.

Gate opens, Kiesanowski tops in RaboDirect Omnium Championships

Auckland cyclist Aaron Gate grabbed his first national title when he dominated a talented field to win the RaboDirect New Zealand Omnium Championships in Invercargill tonight.

Leading after three third placings on the first night, the 20 year old Gate enjoyed two second placings and won the final 1000m time trial at the ILT Velodrome tonight.

Gate finished four points clear of Beijing Olympic medallists Marc Ryan and Hayden Roulston, with former world junior track champion Cameron Karwowski fourth and world omnium silver medallist Shane Archbold fifth.

The women's championship was dominated by Canterbury professional Joanne Kiesanowski who won all three events tonight – the 3000m individual pursuit, 10km scratch race and 500m time trial.

The Team TIBCO rider was in dominant form over the two nights, finishing clear of fellow world championship teammate Gemma Dudley (Levin) and fellow Cantabrian Liz Steel, who was fourth in the omnium at the junior world championships recently.

Gate scored three personal bests on his way to victory and was delighted at his form so soon after returning from a six-month road racing campaign with the BikeNZ under-23 squad in Europe.

"It takes a bit to adjust back to the track although you can simulate it on the erg. It's takes a bit to get the feel of the track again," Gate said. "I am thrilled to get my first individual national title and really pleased to get three big personal bests in the timed events.

"To get those times over the shorter distances was a complete surprise with such little experience. It's reassuring really and I am excited about the track season coming up. I think it goes to show how productive the campaign has been in Europe and that the international competition is showing dividends."

BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott said the two day omnium proved an ideal early season test of the country's leading riders.

"We wanted to get some information on where our riders are at in terms of short and long term power, and their overall fitness. As a fact finding exercise it has been excellent and now we will be evaluating and letting riders know what they need to work on in the next month leading to the Oceania Championships.

"We want our riders to be putting up their hands at that stage towards the London Olympics."

The men complete their camp this week with the endurance women's squad and sprinters coming in for testing over the next week.

Day 2 results, RaboDirect New Zealand Omnium Championships:

Caltex Tour of the Bay – A Great Success

Huge thanks to all those involved – lead drivers, sag crews, packers, lay-out crews, registration crew, 10km herders, tag gatherers, marshals, commentary crew, prize-giving crew, supporters, and gophers. Special thanks to the core organising committee: Gavin Bush (Event Director), Ken MacKenzie (STMS and TOB Chair), Deb Kelly (Admin), Vanessa van Kampen (Admin), Ivar Hopman and Helen MacKenzie.

We do have a red tee-shirt and a pair of black spectacles left by TOB helpers.

Feedback has been resoundingly positive – registration was smooth, the new courses were challenging and rewarding, the finish area was stunning and the prize-giving was slick (as well as comfortable for the riders). An excellent outcome for the 21st Caltex Tour of the Bay.

If you have equipment left over from the weekend (vests, transponders, signage etc), please bring it along to the Saturday race or give it to one of your friendly committee members.

NZ Secondary Schools Cycling Championships: Congratulations Sam, William

Ramblers juniors raced at the NZ secondary school cycling champs (8th-10th October). Sam Thorpe-Loversuch racing in yr 7-8 boys won 2 x bronze medals.

The road race was a close fought uphill bunch sprint. In the points race at Manfield race track Sam placed 2nd in the first sprint (by a tyre width) and 4th in the final sprint. This gave him enough points for the bronze medal. Well done Sam.

Willaim Green rode a smart race with tough competition to take the Bronze medal in the Under 16 Boys Sprint. Other results in earlier blog.

Bronze for Kerry Harford at the Worlds

Points racing is a track discipline where the race is won by the rider who consistently places highly in sprints every ten laps. Points are awarded to the first four riders across the sprint line. Of 70 riders in his age group, Kerry made it into the final with just 23 other riders remaining. He won a few of the first sprints and maintained second place for most of the race, slipping a few points near the end which never-the-less enabled a podium finish and a Bronze World championship medal. Congratulations Kerry.

Gate, Kiesanowski lead way in RaboDirect Omnium Championships

Twenty year old cyclist Aaron Gate set the pace on the opening night of the RaboDirect New Zealand Omnium Championships at the ILT Velodrome in Invercargill tonight.

The young Aucklander showed the benefit of consistency, with three third placings in the three disciplines tonight to lead the way in a closely fought and aggressive men’s event.
Jo Kiesanowski

Another 20 year old, Southland-based and Blenheim-born Cameron Karwowski is one point back in second ahead of the experienced pair of Timaru’s Marc Ryan and Christchurch’s Hayden Roulston, the Beijing double medallist who is making his return to the track.

Fellow Cantabrian Jo Kiesanowski has stamped her class on the women’s omnium, winning all three disciplines – the flying lap, points race and elimination – to clear out from Levin’s Gemma Dudley and Christchurch junior Liz Steel.

BikeNZ coaches wanted their endurance riders to compete in the omnium primarily as a litmus test of their progress as part of a national training camp.

Tonight showed that a group of talented young riders are keen to throw down the challenge to the dominance of the more experienced campaigners.

Gate was consistent throughout, third behind Karwowski and Sam Bewley in the flying lap, third behind Ryan and Roulston in a brilliant points race and third behind the same pair who swapped placings in the elimination race.

Karwowski stayed in the hunt after recovering brilliantly in the elimination race. He crashed with Bewley but got back on his bike and chased down the bunch within two laps and ultimately finished fifth.

Ryan, who is keen to develop his omnium skills, was impressive while Roulston, in his first track racing since the 2008 Olympics, looked more at home with every ride.

World silver medallist Shane Archbold is back in sixth place overall after a quiet night, as he comes to grips with a new racing bike.

Kiesanowski, the Team TIBCO professional in USA, was in a class of her own tonight, winning the flying lap in 14.874, a fraction outside her personal best, untroubled to dispose of fellow world championship teammate Gemma Dudley in the points race and elimination.

Missing from the omnium was the world championship pair of Peter Latham, who has been ill, and Radioshack professional Jesse Sergent, who only arrived back from Europe on Friday.

The omnium is completed tomorrow with the individual pursuit, scratch race and time trial.

Race Report Four (Kerry Harford)

Last day of racing for me and the race that I have targeted, the scratch race. This is the easiest to follow in regards to rules. You all start as a group and charge round till ether everyone has crashed or you cross the finish line, usually after 40 laps. Just like a Saturday / Tuesday night race, but even easier to understand because unlike the road, we can only turn left at the corners so cutting down by 50% the decisions required to stay on course. If you factor in that a track bike has no gears to mess up when changing, you then ask the question "what could possibly go wrong".

Ramblers had also increased their presence by 100% as Karen Moore had turned up to watch the racing. She was a bit perturbed that no one had brakes and that it looked awfully dangerous, a fact supported by a four man crash that would have had bike shop owners weeping with joy in one of the heats, this resulting in a punctured lung and another previously mentioned traditional trip to A & E. I got through my heat and on to the final with all my skin still intact, quite confident that after winning a few sprints yesterday in the point's race I had the required speed, 60kph plus, needed to win if it was a bunch finish.

Naturally it all went pear shaped. One minor crash in the final caught my bike rear wheel but I was fine, meanwhile up front my German friends from yesterday were working together for the win. I got caught a couple of wheels back with five laps to go on the pole line and couldn't get forward as German one was providing the master race of all lead outs to German two. No one could move as we were packed in like high speed kamikaze sardines, the last laps were done as a high speed formation round the track.

One thing I have come away from these track worlds is that you can have all the right training and excellent form in the world but it makes it very tough unless you are racing lots on a wooden indoor velodrome against good competition.

Cheers

BikeNZ riders take first push towards London Olympics

BikeNZ have taken their first steps towards the London Olympic track cycling campaign with a training camp in Invercargill.

The 29-strong group are split into three squads – men’s endurance, women’s endurance and sprint squads – and will come in and out of the camp at various stages over the next two weeks.

The camp is focussing on testing the individual riders, both in terms of sports science and technology over a range of differing training loads.

“It’s our first serious step towards London,” said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott.

“There’s a lot of individual work at this camp with our sports scientists and our technology experts as well as all of our coaching staff.

“This camp is more about getting the wider groups from separate track programmes together to ensure our key performance staff are working effectively with all of these riders.”

The endurance squads will contest the New Zealand Omnium Championships on 18-19 October as part of the camp.

“The omnium comprises a range of events from timed races like the time trials and pursuit to the endurance events like scratch race and points. So it provides a good opportunity for us to monitor where each rider is at and from there our staff can begin to fine tune what each rider will need to focus on going forward.”

This initial camp includes World Tour riders Jesse Sergent and Sam Bewley from Radioshack, and fellow professional Hayden Roulston who is making his first appearance back on the track since his double medalling winning efforts at the Beijing Olympics.

“Hayden has always had a hankering to come back to the track. This camp offers him the chance to see where he is at and if he believes he has a realistic chance to be competitive in this environment again.”

Elliott said the real heat will go on the riders in the next camp in November which precedes the Oceania Championships in Invercargill, where important Olympic qualifying points will be available for some categories.

Following the championships BikeNZ will then select squads to compete in three UCI World Cups in Astana, Cali and Beijing in December and January ahead of the test event in London.

“From there we will have a further very important training camp before selecting the team for the World Championships in Melbourne in early April, and from this will come the team for the Olympics.”

The riders to take part in the first BikeNZ camp are:

Sprint squad: Sam Webster, Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell, Simon van Velthooven, Matt Archibald, Nathan Seddon, Natasha Hansen, Stephanie McKenzie, Katie Schofield.

Men’s endurance: Jesse Sergent, Sam Bewley, Wes Gough, Marc Ryan, Hayden Roulston, Pete Latham, Aaron Gate, Shane Archbold, Tom Scully, Cameron Karwowski, Jason Allen, Myron Simpson.

Women’s endurance: Alison Shanks, Jo Kiesanowski, Kaytee Boyd, Jaime Nielsen, Lauren Ellis, Gemma Dudley, Rushlee Buchanan, Sequoia Cooper.

Kerry Harford - Bronze in Sprint at Worlds

Points racing today, this is always pretty stressful. This race is won by the rider who consistently places highly in sprints every ten laps. Points are awarded to the first four riders across the sprint line. That's the easy bit; the hard bit is to avoid being one of the riders involved in the traditional pile up and the equally traditional trip to the local A & E in an ambulance.

My heat went according to tradition. I won the first sprint and considered that enough to keep me in the top twelve of the twenty four riders and get me into the final. I then sat in the bunch which was hair raising and just before the last ditch sprint effort to make the final, four riders went down and one got his ride in the ambulance. The vet fours second heat crash was so bad they closed the track for repairs.

On to our Final with twenty four riders out of the seventy odd in our age group. I won a couple of sprints early on but those efforts meant I was a bit stuffed and struggling to stay in the pack when the speed was really high. One Argentinian managed to get relegated for dangerous riding twice which kept me in second position till right near the end, where I slipped down to third and a World championship bronze medal.

In the medal ceremony I had two Germans for company. I have a German sister in law and I know she reads these so I have to be a wee bit careful. As we walked on to the podium I narrowly avoided goose stepping and I didn't mention the war, not even once, so that was pretty successful. They raise the German and New Zealand flags which was pretty sweet as they played the German National anthem.

All that charging round behind Ivar's scooter is starting to pay off.

Scratch racing tomorrow and I go home on Friday.

Hawke’s Bay Trails Unlock Opportunities

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has already constructed part of the Hawke’s Bay Trails, but is some months away from completing the entire project which now includes a Water Ride, Landscape Ride and Wineries Ride.

The just-launched Nga Haeranga: The New Zealand Cycle Trail Official Trail Partner Programme will include local trail partners like Takaro Trails with other bike hire, transport, accommodation and food partners likely to jump on board as the profile for Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail grows nationally and internationally.

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council will advise a formal launch date for Hawke’s Bay Trails in 2012.

Hawke’s Bay Trails are delivered by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, with the support of Napier City and Hastings District Councils, Rotary clubs, Community Trusts, corporate and private individuals and Hawke’s Bay Tourism. The first off-road pathway was opened in 2003 by Napier City Mayor Barbara Arnott with the support of local Rotary clubs. A decade on, the 180+ kilometres of tracks are a “Great Ride” on the New Zealand Cycle Trail confirming Hawke’s Bay as Heretaunga Ararau – the land of a hundred pathways.

Kiwi Businesses Invited to Partner with New Zealand Cycle Trail

Nga Haerenga: The New Zealand Cycle Trail Official Partner Programme was launched in the Hawke’s Bay yesterday.

This programme will provide a framework for a collaborative approach between the 18 Great Rides (under the New Zealand Cycle Trail) and New Zealand businesses.

The programme has been designed to build the profile of The New Zealand Cycle Trail, increase turnover for New Zealand businesses that relate to the trail and provide increased downstream economic benefits to regional communities.

New Zealand Cycle Trail Programme Manager, John Dunn, says the physical trail is only one part of the overall cycle trail product that will attract cyclists to the 18 Great Rides spread throughout New Zealand. “Cyclists using the 18 Great Rides will need a range of services including everything from accommodation, transport, bike hire, food, petrol and even activities for when they are not cycling. They will expect a high level of customer service and a warm welcome.”

The Official Partner programme will aim to increase New Zealand’s credibility as a cycling destination. For further information, check out the New Zealand Cycle Trail website at: http://www.nzcycletrail.com/ or email nzcycletrail@med.govt.nz .

BikeNZ Napier Commuter Challenge

Monday 31st Oct to Friday 4th November 2011

Bike NZ Cycling Development Co-coordinator Vicki Butterworth wants to get more Hawke’s Bay people using bikes to ride to work. The aim is to encourage, promote and educate people about the benefits of commuting by bike to work and in 2011 the BikeNZ Napier Commuter challenge will be run for the third year! It’s a fun and healthy way to start the day so why not!

NEW FORMAT: We asked for your feedback and based on your responses we’ve made some exciting changes for this year. Thanks! The biggest change will be that we will only have ONE WEEK of ‘breakfast treats’! A big thank you to all organisations and business’s coming on board again, they invest in cycle commuting - so remember to thank them for their support.

GRAND PRIZE: We have a brand new major Prize up for grabs. Yes - this year in conjunction with Bayview Wairakei Resort, Taupo we are offering you a weekend away in Taupo with the opportunity to ride part of the NZ Cycle Trails. This prize is a luxury nights’ accommodation, dinner and breakfast, at Bayview Wairakei Resort, Taupo!

Enjoy a weekend of riding (OR Golf, Tennis, Swimming) all while being pampered by the team at Wairakei Resort. These guys get cycling, so much so that in conjunction with Bike Taupo they have recently built a trail, on their grounds, that links onto the Waikato River trails. Taupo has some of the best cycle tracks and trails to be ridden – these pathways/trails/tracks cater for all abilities and levels. Have you tried the W2K track or Kawakawa Bay track? They are must dos from Kinloch village and part of the New Zealand Cycle Trails - stunning. With plenty to riding to suit everyone you will enjoy a fantastic cycling weekend. Taupo, like Hawke’s Bay is also investing in cycling and it’s only next door. Fantastic!
http://www.wairakei.co.nz/Mountain-Biking-Taupo

WHAT TO DO: No need to pre-register this year, just ride in, register your name with Vicki at the breakfast each morning. Cycle in between 7am and 8.30am each day from 31st Oct to 4th Nov to the ‘business of the day’ and register. Receive a breakfast treat from your fantastic supporting business and organisation on your way to work. And yes, there are still daily prize draws to be won too. To be in the draw for the Grand prize you have to ride for 4 out of 5 days on the commuter challenge this. A big ask - we know you’re keen and can do it!

We have had great support from local businesses over the years, thank you! With only one week this year to fill it’s made it pretty hard to keep you all from last year, so thank you for understanding and being so supportive. See attached calendar for the dates and locations. You can also find the calendar online at www.sporthb.net.nz

Commuting by bike really is a great way to get to and from work! Look forward to seeing you all and meeting some new faces.

Kerry Harford – Manchester Race Report 1

I have arrived in Manchester. Coronation Street immediately springs to mind for most people as Manchester's sole contribution to the culture of English speakers everywhere, so I was told to look out for people from that program. I unfortunately have missed a number of the latest episodes so I was not sure what to make of the reaction I got when I asked a local if the person I had just seen walk by was in fact Ena Sharples. They seemed a bit upset in fact. I may have spotted Bobby the cat as well, but I didn't get a good look, it may of course been Bobby's stunt double.

Manchester has opened my eyes regarding cooking. I was fairly certain I was near the bottom of the list as far as cooking ability goes but it would appear that here there is some stiff competition here. The local McDonalds is a high mark around here as far as food is concerned. In New Zealand they have to rely on having the best playground and slick marketing, so that for instance my boys first words where 'McDonalds', and they learnt early to spot and identify the golden arches from a distance roughly the same as the distance from the Hub car park down to the McDonalds in Hereatunga street. Here in Manchester, McDonalds can market themselves as a truly family restaurant because the quality of their food is so much better than the rest.

The local Pub has an impressive menu but it's all rubbish. The kitchen has a picture of each individual dish pasted on the wall, and all the' chef' has to do is put the food on a plate straight from the packet and lovingly microwave for three minutes on high. He then checks it's just like the picture, before serving. The Hotel we are staying at consider all that fuss and attention to detail way over the top for their guests, we get a 'food' considerably less well made. Even that well known contribution to modern international haute culture, the Aussie male, has had a moan about the local food.

The people flipping burgers and scooping chips in McDonalds have an arrogance and air about them of people at the top of their game, as they are the cities top chef. Master chef Manchester could blind test them and they would be the only one capable of successfully distinguish the food from the cardboard.

As the saying goes, in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

Julian Dean Joins GreenEDGE

New Zealand's most celebrated road cyclist, Julian Dean, is set to join the new Australian team GreenEDGE Cycling for the 2012 season.

The 36-year-old Dean confirmed the move after competing at the UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen.

Dean said he was excited about at least one more year at the sport's highest level after he heard about the new Australian team, which was launched earlier this year.

"It is a hugely exciting development for cycling, especially in Australia and New Zealand," Dean said. "After I learned more about the team and their philosophies, I was really enthused and wanted to be part of it.

"With the quality of the team named I'm confident we'll get World Tour status straight away. This is a really big deal and we've not seen anything of this magnitude in any sport in Australasia before. It is huge."

Dean completes his four-year contract with Garmin-Cervelo at the end of the year.

The two-time New Zealand champion has gained a reputation as one of the sport's premier sprinters, with 2010 world champion Thor Hushovd labelling Dean the best lead-out rider in the world.

GreenEDGE will be Dean's fifth major cycling team after US Postal (1999-2001), CSC-Tiscali (2002-2003), Credit Agricole (2004-2007) and Garmin-Chipotle (later Garmin-Cervelo) in 2008-2011.

He has completed seven Tours de France and was part of this year's Garmin-Cervelo team that won the team time trial and finished as leading team at Le Tour.

He enjoyed three podium finishes in the2010 Tour de France as well as two podiums at the Giro d'Italia. In the 2008 Tour de France he took a top-10 placing in six stages and in 2009 he was the only professional to complete all three grand tours – the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana.

Dean believes he is riding as well as at any time in his long career.

"I think I have something still to offer and believe over the last two to three years especially, I have raced at my best," he said.

"There're plenty of incentives next year with this new team wanting to make a mark and I would also love to compete in my fifth Olympics - that would be special."

Dean would not be drawn if he would retire at the end of next year.

"At this stage I am just looking one year at a time, and there are no specific plans to race in 2013. But you never say "never."
