Lance is not only Armstrong but also Core-strong. Many hours were spend on stabilizing and strengthening his core muscles in preparations for his last comeback.
In recent months our juniors have been through rigorous core and erg sessions, this has lead to great results on the bike: stage wins at major tours, podium placings at Nationals and all have gone up several grades at our club racing.
Core strength is essential for cyclist to be able to be efficient and economic on the bike, more speed and less energy wasting.
And it also helps with injury prevention especially for the lower back.
At Cityfitness we offer Spin classes followed by a Core work-out.
You will get a interval session in the state of the art Ride-studio followed by a Core strength session, where we take you through sets of abdominal exercises.
We have organized an introduction evening on Wednesday 15 Juni from 6.30 till 8.30pm at Cityfitness, 8 Lever Str. Ahuriri.
For further details please contact Ivar Hopman: 021 451 588.

BikeNZ/CAN/NZTA Cyclist Skills Instructor training course dates
BikeNZ and CAN have been appointed by the NZ Transport Agency to train cyclist skills instructors in order to fulfil a new NZQA qualification.
This new national standard is to ensure cycle skills instructors, whether they are delivering the BikeNZ Learn to Ride programme or any other certified programme, have the knowledge and skills needed to teach both adults and children to ride safely.
Three Grade One courses will be held in June around the country, with a further 12 courses being run over the next year to cover grades one to three of the NZTA guidelines.
These NZQA accredited courses would normally be valued at $420, but for the next 15 months NZTA has subsidised the courses to reduce the cost to $75 per participant.
This cost is a BikeNZ/CAN cyclist skills training instructor annual fee to allow instructors to have ongoing professional development, an online database, and an online resource centre.
The Hastings Grade One course dates a: 15/16 June
Visit www.bikenz.org.nz/grade1 to register.

Rabodirect Club Road National Championships, Wanganui 2011
Our Team Managers were Warren Foulds (days 1 & 2) and Ivar Hopman (days 3 & 4). Feedback from riders and support crew is that they did a fantastic job.
On behalf of all club members, thanks Warren and Ivar for stepping up and organising our riders so well.
Thank you also to the family and friends who formed support crews every day.
It makes a big difference to riders to know you are there.
Club Nationals 2011: Final Results for Ramblers
Andrew Townsend: M3 male - ITT gold
Ingrid Perols: M4 female - ITT silver
Fraser Gough: U19 male - ITT silver,RR gold
Kerri-Anne Torckler: Elite female - ITT bronze, RR silver
Craig Hill - 1st in C2 Paracycling
Unfortunately (because of the way rules and times are structured by Bike NZ Road and Track) Craig Hill was not awarded an actual gold medal (as stated in the last eNews). Craig did never-the-less finish first in his grade and the club acknowledges this fantastic effort.
Special mention also to U19 women Hannah van Kampen and Megan Watson.
Although not on the podium, Hannah had an excellent Nationals coming 4th in the ITT and 6th in the road race.
Megan put in a gutsy ride to complete the first lap in support of Hannah before having to DNF with an injury.

What is BikeNZ Development?
BikeNZ, BikeNZ development and BikeNZ Road & Track are terms which are often used interchangeably.
However, despite the similar names they operate with different focus'.
Ramblers members will be most familiar with BikeNZ Road & Track who are responsible for the recent Club Road Nationals, and who enforce UCI regulations in racing.
BikeNZ Development has a participation (not racing) focus, and Whether it’s mountain bike, BMX, road, track, commuting or other everyday cycling, BikeNZ Development want everyone on two wheels
Led by Amy Taylor, BikeNZ Development is a regional team of four and central team of two.
The team facilitates and delivers the Learn to Ride programme to ensure that all children in New Zealand are taught to ride a bicycle.
They work with CAN and NZTA to train all cycle-skills instructors, and coordinate coach and official’s education.
Most importantly the team is helping to develop an educational and opportunities pathway from learning to ride to regularly participating in cycling.
SOME KEY STATISTICS FROM THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2011
• 1072 children aged 7-11 learnt to ride!
• 7 new Learn to Ride instructors trained
• 4 new BikeNZ Level 1 coaches accredited
• Enabled 321 children the opportunity to ride through three events
• Enabled 325 teens and adults the opportunity to ride through recreational and everyday community cycling initiatives
• Organised one club forum to help develop cycling clubs
• Created a BikeNZ coaching database
Vicki Butterworth is a cycling development officer for our region with a focus on getting people of all ages, shpes, sizes and abilities onto bicycles in our region.

Ramblers celebrate Gold at Nationals Road Race
In a well fought battle Fraser Gough was able to overcome the strong u19 field to take the Gold Medal. The PBR junior squad had agreed that they were racing for their clubs so a lot of reputations were at stake. Fraser worked hard on the first lap and a group of about 15 were able to break from the main bunch and were not going to be pulled back. Hayden McCormick (first year) put in some big efforts but was unable to get clear of the group. Hayden attacked early on the sprint but was rolled on the line by Fraser. Dion Smith took the Bronze with James Oram and Scott Creighton close behind. Logan Bean CHB just missed out on the front bunch and finished the next best from the Bay.
Riding for CHB Kerry Harford had to call on all of his sprinting nous and courage to win the Vet 3 men's gold. Craig Hoskin and Steve Wright had been away for most of the race with the Gap out to 2 minutes going into the final lap. Stu Imrie got the big motor going motivating the peleton to close the gap to 45 secs going into the last hill. With Blair Suthridge on his wheel Kerry kicked at about 500 meters catching Craig and Steve with about 150m to go. They looked around but couldn't muster the energy to respond after the 80 km's away. With no choice Kerry kept the hammer down and Blair was unable to get past. Kerry was quick to praise Ramblers riders Jeff Flatt (22) Austin Mortimer (6th) and Darryl Strachan (9th) who did a lot of work in the pursuit of the leaders.
In changing weather conditions Kerri-Anne Torckler rode strongly to go one up on her TT Bronze to take the Silver in the elite women's race. Phillippa Sutton took the gold with Mel Burke 3rd.
Hannah Van Kampen was unlucky again not to medal and was pipped into 6th in a bunch sprint won by Sophie Williamson in the U19 womens. Hannah rode well on the hills and with any luck will have caught the selectors eye. An insect bite (spider ?) forced Megan Watson out of the race with an inflamed calf.

after Gordon McCauley acknowledged Karl Murrays outstanding ride and didn't compete the sprint.
Karl Murray and been out the front of the race all day dropping one other rider before Gordon jumped across. Karl and Gordon stayed solo for another two laps before taking the honors. Mel Titter was third about 2.5 minutes back closely followed by the remaining bunch. Ramblers Paul Langford and Dylan Stewart both had excellent rides finishing 9th and 13th respectively.
Blair Heney 14th and Bruce Herron 17th were the best of the ramblers in the Vet 2 men's grade totally dominated by Aaron Strong. Aaron escaped early in the race to get pulled back by the peleton in the second lap. Unfazed he went again in the 3rd lap and stayed away to finish by over two minutes on the decimated chasing bunch.
Friday was a tough day for the Ramblers riders. Phoebe Treseder was riding well in the u17 girls with the Ramblers supporters looking forward to her sprint prowess. It wasn't to be however with 2 minor crashes in the last lap splitting Phoebe out from the leading bunch. Maxyna Cottam took the bronze with Devon Hiley continuing her dominance of this grade and taking the Gold. Holly Atkins finished 18th.
Regan Gough Silver behind Mark Findlay in the u17 Boys with Damien Lysaght 9th the best of the Ramblers usurping some of the other top riders. Mike Garrity had one of his better rides of late for 17th place in the near 70 strong field.
CHB Corbin Mason Smith CHB just missed out on the double again being pipped in the bunch sprint by Sam Dobbs to take the silver.
Amanda Jamieson CHB 4th in the u15 girls also a bunch sprint.
Peter Strong CHB 4th in the Masters 8 men the Gold taken by Gray Ulmer.
Alan Black frustratingly 4th in the Masters 6 Men's after an on road agreement was reneged.
In the Vet 4 men the Ramblers riders missed out on the early break With Jim McMurray, Tony Catterick, Andrew Morrisey and Scott Molina too strong for the field. Bret Harte was once again unlucky dropping his chain and losing his tag early in the race. Bruce Lochhead 20th, Bret 21st and Kevin Burgess 22nd struggled to motivate the large bunch to work effectively to bring back the break.
Still Chasing Gold on the way home.

AGM 2011: Meet Your New Committee
Ramblers AGM was held on Monday 2nd May in the Blue Room at the Bluewater Hotel in Napier.
Special thanks for their time and contributions to Gavin Scoble, Tony Hartley and Roy van Panhuys who retired from committee, as well as Dean Clifford and Ivan Aplin who stepped off during the year.
It is worth mentioning Tony's 10 consecutive years on committee, and Roy's (at least) 13 years. Congratulations to Roy who has joined a small but well-deserving group when he was made an Life Member of Ramblers Cyclyng Club.
A fuller summary of the AGM will be in a future eNews, in the meantime your committee are:
Chair: Gavin Bush
Treasurer: Mark Coombe
Club Captain: Hilary Green
Committee: (continuing for another year) Don Kennedy, Ken MacKenzie, Rob Oliver (nominated and voted on for the coming year) Dan Warren, Su Daniel, Brett Hooker and Helen MacKenzie.
Thank you to these 10 members for being willing to lead the club over the 2011/12 season.
Another important part of the club is recently appointed Club Administrator, Deb Kelly, and the AGM was an opportunity for some more of you to meet her.

Our Thoughtful Riders
Thank you to Charlie Fergus and another rider (who was not identified) for instructing the whole D grade bunch to slow down to a crawl to allow Holly to stop and refit her front wheel as the axel lock had come loose.
If the she continued on it could have cause a huge accident for Holly and those around her.
These riders showed great awareness and sportsmanship (and the whole bunch for stopping) to prevent harm to fellow racers.

There was a request at the AGM that the club dinner is reinstated.
Any member who is interested in organising this is most welcome.
The task involves liasing with a committee member (email/phone - you don't have to come to a meeting) to set a date (be mindful of rugby matches!).
Then get quotes from a couple of venues, liase with committee again, book the venue, send the information for eNews and then collate members wishing to attend.

Three Grade One courses will be held in June, with a further 12 courses being run over the next year to cover grades one to three of the NZTA guidelines.
These NZQA accredited courses would normally be valued at $420, but for the next 15 months NZTA has subsidised the courses to reduce the cost to $75* per participant.
This cost is a BikeNZ/CAN cyclist skills training instructor annual fee to allow instructors to have ongoing professional development, an online database, and an online resource centre.
The Grade One course dates are as follows:
15/16 June - Hastings
18/19 June – New Plymouth
25/26 June – Auckland
Visit http:www.bikenz.org.nz/grade1 to register for any of the above three courses.
