Torckler, Boyd take cycling victories in Taupo race

PureBlack Racing's Michael Torckler handled the tough conditions best in a solo win at the Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge today.

Strong winds made for a tough 160km race, with over half of the field being dropped in the first 10km.

Torckler was involved in the decisive break that caught early leaders Sam Horgan (Subway Pro Cycling) and Mike Northey (PureBlack Racing) at 60 km mark.

The 11-man break including Torckler's teammates Alex Ray and Taylor Gunman, and Subway Pro Cycling's Nick Lovegrove and Horgan established a five minute lead. Torckler

Torckler made a break with 80kms still remaining in a gutsy move before Wellington's Joseph Cooper bridged to the leader. However Torckler attacked again up the tough Hautepe Hill with Cooper unable to respond.

"It was a really strong headwind and they guys weren't that motivated to work together, so I attacked on the climb with 80 kms to go," said Torckler. "After I attacked again up Hautepe, the wind was blowing me around a wee bit when I was solo. It was worst in the last three kms."

Torckler crossed the line over two and a half minutes ahead of PureBlack Racing teammate Mike Northey with Cooper third.

Torckler has recovered well from a serious crash at the beginning of the year, adding the Taupo victory to his win in the K2 Cycle Challenge last month. He is looking ahead to the RaboDirect Elite Road National Championships in Christchurch next month and an international season with Pure Black Racing.

Meanwhile Waiuku's Kaytee Boyd flew in to Taupo after competing in the Oceania Track Championships in Invercargill to win the elite women's race.

The BikeNZ pursuit specialist made the decisive move on the Hatepe Hill when she broke clear in a bunch including Sonia Waddell (Cambridge), Mel Burke (Auckland), Emma Crum (Auckland), Keri-Ann Torckler (New Plymouth), and Rita Trotman (Christchurch).

They established a 50 second lead with Boyd showing the benefits of her track strength and speed to out-sprint her rivals for victory over Waddell and Burke. It marked a successful week for Waddell, the former Olympic rower, who won the international regional para-cycling pursuit title with visually-impaired fellow world champion partner Jayne Parsons at Invercargill this week.

RESULTS:

Elite Men, 160km: Michael Torckler (PureBlack Racing) 3.48.53, 1; Mike Northey (PureBlack Racing) 3.51.18, 2; Joseph Cooper (Wellington) 3.51.23, 3.

Elite Women, 100km: Kaytee Boyd (Waiuku) 3.04.38, 1; Sonia Waddell (Cambridge) 3.04.39, 2; Melanie Burke (Auckland) ST, 3.

Powerful squad named for cycling world cup

BikeNZ has selected a powerful 13-strong squad for next week's UCI World Cup in Colombia.

It is led by the record-setting riders who performed impressively at the Oceania Championships that finished in Invercargill last night.

The riders made an early exit from Invercargill this morning and will fly out of Auckland for the long haul to Cali later tonight.

The squad comprises the men's and women's team pursuit, men's and women's omnium and a men's sprint group.

The women's pursuit team is the same combination that went within 0.2s of the world record this week, comprising Alison Shanks, Lauren Ellis and Jaime Nielsen.

The men's pursuit quartet that set the fastest time in the world this year to date is Jesse Sergent, Sam Bewley, Aaron Gate and Marc Ryan.

World omnium silver medallist Shane Archbold has been selected, along with Joanne Kiesanowski, who is expected to travel despite withdrawing from the second day of the omnium yesterday on a precautionary basis after feeling unwell.

There are four sprinters heading to Cali comprising Sam Webster, Simon Van Velthooven, Ethan Mitchell and Eddie Dawkins.

"We wanted the riders to be in form for the Oceania Championships and we are pleased they responded with such good times on what were receptive conditions at the ILT Velodrome," said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott.

"The squad going to Cali mirrors those performances and those riders have put their hands up for selection. The riders not selected for Cali will have an opportunity at the World Cup next month in Beijing and at the camp in the New Year.

"We will be collating that information before selecting the team to compete at to the London World Cup in February and the World Championships in Melbourne in March.

"It is all part of the pathway programme that we have mapped out for our riders many months ago to ensure we leave no stone unturned within our resources to achieve the best possible results for the London Olympics.

"There's real depth and competition for spots inside the programme which is encouraging and we have to ensure all those riders have an opportunity to prove themselves. We have an objective and precise sports science programme to capture that information both in training and competition."

BikeNZ is expecting the riders' form to hold for the Cali World Cup, subject to the rigours of 30 hours travel and the open-air environment at the track.

"Many of the leading nations will have full strength teams at Cali so it will provide a reasonable litmus test on how we stack up."

BikeNZ is also delighted with the burgeoning depth in the programme, especially in the sprint arena where the women, led by Natasha Hansen and Katie Schofield, have emerged this week with world class times.

The squad for Cali is: Shane Archbold (Timaru), Sam Bewley (Rotorua), Eddie Dawkins (Invercargill), Lauren Ellis (Hinds), Aaron Gate (Auckland), Joanne Kiesanowski (Christchurch), Ethan Mitchell (Auckland), Marc Ryan (Timaru), Jaime Nielsen (Hamilton), Jesse Sergent (Feilding), Alison Shanks (Dunedin), Simon van Velthooven (Feilding), Sam Webster (Auckland).

Coaches: Tim Carswell (Christchurch), Dayle Cheatley (Wanganui), Justin Grace (Auckland). Team Leader: Stephen Connell.

OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 4 WRAP 9pm

New Zealand's burgeoning sprint cycling programme received a thumbs up after a record-breaking week at the Oceania Track Championships in Invercargill tonight.

Twenty-year-old Aucklander Sam Webster capped their performances with a breakthrough victory in the men's sprint, beating off the challenge from Commonwealth Games kilo champion Scott Sunderland in two straight rides in the final at the ILT Velodrome.

BikeNZ riders have won all of the sprint events this week, usually the domain of the Australians, and set new national records in the sprint, team sprint and 1000m time trial in the process.

"Two years ago almost to the day we put in place some pretty lofty goals for this sprint programme. In terms of timing we are on track and in terms of performance we are way ahead of it," said BikeNZ national sprint coach Justin Grace.

"Everyone has improved this week. We've won every event and we have broken records. I am not getting too carried away yet because we have to compare ourselves against the best in the world in competition.

"But I am pleased with how we are progressing. More than that our women's programme is virtually tracking like the men did two years ago and we have other riders developing as well. It's quite exciting."

After keirin and time trial champion Simon Van Velthooven lowered the national record in sprint qualifying this morning to 10.217, Webster produced a world class 10.106 in the final ride to top qualifiers

He progressed unscathed through the elimination rounds and had too much speed for Sunderland in the finals.

"Happy does not go anywhere near far enough for that," a delighted Webster said. "Ecstatic, over-the-moon, use any adjective you want. It's something I've wanted for a long time. It's great to be able to bring the whole package to race day.

"I've earned an automatic start at the world championships and it's a big swag of Olympic points towards our sprint tally. It's been a great week for us. We've won every sprint event which has done our Olympic points a real boost and our confidence heading to Cali World Cup tomorrow."

Southland based sprinter Natasha Hansen produced the sizzle in the women's sprint qualifying with a sensational 11.366 which lowered the national record as well as the allcomers record for the track.

Earlier world junior championship medallist Stephanie McKenzie (Auckland) had broken the old mark with a 11.616 effort.

The two kiwis progressed solidly through the elimination rounds but found the more experienced Australians more than a handful. McKenzie lost in a decided third ride against Cassandra Kell for third place, and Hansen lost to Stephanie Morton in two straight rides in the final, after she was relegated in the second ride.

There was more success for the kiwis with Timaru's Shane Archbold showing his nous on the second day of the competition to win the six-discipline omnium.

The world champion silver medallist finished second in the individual pursuit behind a flying Westley Gough, and second to local rider Andrew van der Hayden in the 15km scratch race.

Hawkes Bay's Westley Gough produced a world class time of 4:19.720 to be fastest in the 4000m individual pursuit. Archbold (4:25.840) was second fastest, extending his lead in the competition ahead of Jason Allen (4:27.496).

Local rider van der Heyden took his chance to push clear with six laps to go in the scratch race. Archbold put on the after-burners two laps out and all-but chased down the Southlander but impressed with his second placing.

Gough again showed his talent with an excellent 1:03.044 effort to take out the final event, the 1000m time trial with Archbold achieving a personal best 1:03.207 for second.

That was enough for Archbold to claim the overall honours from Gough and Allen.

New Zealand interest in the women's omnium faded when top rider Joanne Kiesanowski withdrew with illness after a disappointing individual pursuit in the morning, well below her best.

It meant the women's contest became a two-horse race with triple world junior champion Amy Cure holding a lead over compatriot Ashlee Ankudinoff, a member of the world champion winning team pursuit last year.

Ankudinoff produced the goods today, winning all three events. She topped the 3000m individual pursuit in 3:38.649 from Cure, and sprinted clear with two laps remaining to claim the 10km scratch race with Cure second ahead of kiwi Sequoia Cooper.

With Cure leading by one point going into the 500m time trial, Ankudinoff produced a world class 35.893 to win from Cure and Canterbury junior Liz Steel. This brought the pair level on 11 points each, with Ankudinoff given the gold medal on a better accumulated total in the timed events.

Australian Katherine Bates was awarded the bronze on a similar countback from Southland's Cooper.

Earlier Daniel Ellison from Nelson took out the final of the under-19 men's keirin final, just holding out Australia's Tirian McManus.

The New Zealand team to contest next weekend's UCI World Cup in Cali will be named tomorrow morning.

Westley Produces World Class Time 4000M IP

The records kept tumbling on the final morning of qualifying at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill today.

It was the chance for the sprinters to shine, with four New Zealand records broken at the ILT Velodrome.

New Zealand's Natasha Hansen, the former Cantabrian now living in Southland, not only celebrated a new national and allcomers record in qualifying, but heads into the sprint final tonight where she will meet Australian Stephanie Morton, after both won their semifinals in two straight rides.

Auckland's Sam Webster, like Hansen, set a new national and allcomers record in qualifying and forced his way through to the final where he will meet the Commonwealth Games kilo gold medallist, Scott Sunderland (Australia).

Keirin champion Simon Van Velthooven set things alight in the early stages with a New Zealand record performance, clocking 10.217 in qualifying, inside his previous best of 10.35. Australian Andrew Taylor went quicker at 10.181 – to be close to the previous quickest time on the track of 10.154 set by compatriot Mark French.

The starter in New Zealand's team sprint combination, Ethan Mitchell set a personal best 10.287 to continue his strong form, with Eddie Dawkins clocking 10.232.

It took to the second last rider to set the morning alight when top kiwi sprinter Webster set a stunning 10.106s, which broke the record Van Velthooven had set early, as well as the all-comers record for the track.

Young kiwi sprinter Katie Schofield from Dunedin set the tone in the women's sprint qualifying with a personal best 11.790, which was her first time under the 12 second barrier.

The big move came from world junior sprint silver medallist Stephanie McKenzie from Auckland who set a superb 11.616, faster than her medal winning performance in Moscow and under the previous New Zealand record held by Hansen.

But Hansen answered the call when she produced a sensational 11.366 which lowered the national record as well as the allcomers record for the track.

The 2010 team pursuit world champion Ashlee Akuninoff (Australia) produced a strong 3:38.649 to claim the win in the fourth event of the women's omnium, the 3000m individual pursuit. She led home compatriot Amy Cure, the 2010 junior world champion and record holder who clocked 3:39.984.

Co-leader in the competition overnight, Joanne Kiesanowski (NZL) felt unwell today and accordingly did not have a strong performance, finishing sixth fastest to slip down the overall leaderboard behind the two Australians with two events remaining tonight.

Hawkes Bay rider Westley Gough produced a world class time of 4:19.720 to be fastest in the 4000m individual pursuit.

Shane Archbold (4:25.840) was second fastest and has extended his lead in the competition to five points over Gough with Jason Allen (4:27.496) third on 15 points.

OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 3 WRAP

Big Manawatu sprinter Simon Van Velthooven showed real maturity in his young career with a superb victory in keirin on the third night of finals in Invercargill tonight.

The 22-year-old produced a massive effort in the final thrust at the line to edge out Australian champion Scott Sunderland.

It was van Velthooven's third gold medal this week after national records in winning the team sprint and 1000m time trial.

Van Velthooven has been the fourth rider among the burgeoning sprint group but his performances have forced him into real consideration for next year's London Olympics.

"This year I did not go to Japan to race in the professional series and that was a good thing," Van Velthooven said. "It allowed me to train in Europe with the guys, then race in the US and come back and really prepare well.

"I knew if I got behind Sunderland I would get boxed in and not get over him. But I just held there for two laps on his wheel. I lost some ground in the corners but made it up in the straights. I knew with my kilo performance that I could hang in there.

"To be fair even at the last corner I was behind but that's great to get up."

Sunderland finished second with compatriot Peter Lewis third with the other kiwi Eddie Dawkins unable to get clear air.

Earlier world silver medallist Shane Archbold showed speed and skill to claim the lead after three events of the men's omnium at the ILT Velodrome.

Archbald (Timaru) produced a personal best to win the Flying Lap and disappointed for fifth in the Points race earlier in the day, before bouncing back to win the Elimination race with an assured display.

After three races he leads on seven points with fellow kiwis Cameron Karwowski and veteran Jason Allen sharing second on 12 points, Westley Gough on 13 and the leading Australian Edward Bissaker on 14.

Canterbury professional Joanne Kiesanowski proved her super-consistent self with three second placings to be second overall on six points, sandwiched one point behind Amy Cure and two ahead of her Australian teammate Ashlee Ankudinoff.

Kiesanowski produced a personal best to finish behind world champion pursuiter Ankudinoff in the Flying Lap, with the kiwis' 14.795 a personal best.

Cure dominated the points race, getting away in a break to put a lap on the field mid-race which set her up for the win, but Kiesanowski showed so much nous to finish second.

Again Kiesanowski was classy throughout the Elimination but the explosive Cure held her off in the final sprint for the win.

The men's under-19 New Zealand combination of Hayden McCormick, Tom Beadle, Kristoff Ford and Dylan Kennett smashed the national record in winning their 4000m final over Australia, clocking 4:11.339.

The young kiwi rider came back to win the under-19 10km scratch race when he held out the world junior omnium champion Caleb Ewan by 5/1000th of a second on the photo finish.

It capped a great week for Kennett, with the Waimate teenager picking up four gold medal, with three of then won in national records.

The evening was completed with a superb men's 30km points race, won brilliantly in the final sprint by Southland star Tom Scully. The Garmin development team professional edged out New Zealand representative Aaron Gate in the last sprint of the night to finish one point clear.

The championships conclude tomorrow with the completion of the omnium competition and sprints for men and women.

Reminder to Swipe Your Transponders

Our next Saturday race is scheduled for December 3rd. Please remember to swipe your transponder at the race trailer before each Saturday race. If you don’t swipe your transponder, you can not expect a result.

Rider Behaviour

Due to ongoing concerns with race safety, some riders and grades have recently been disqualified and received no race points.

A number of riders have also been cautioned about unsafe behaviour, in particular crossing the centre line.

Riders may face ongoing sanctions including being stood down from racing.

We urge ALL members to consider safety first and be firm in reminding all others that they MUST comply with our rules and NZ road rules.

The Disciplinary Policy is currently being reviewed, and it may be that in future the names of all transgressing riders will be published.

Rider Protocol

You are reminded that at each race briefing that if you are dropped and end up joining another grade, you MUST NOT interfere with the race.

It has been noted in the past few Saturday races, some grades are joining with a lower grade after being dropped, and are then riding in the pack, taking turns on the front or drafting riders back to the peloton.

This is unnacceptable as it interfers with the outcome of the race. If you join another grade, you must stay at the back of the pack and do no work for the other grade.

Hawke's Bay Trails Update

You are invited by Drew Broadley (Community Engagement & Communications Manager Hawke's Bay Regional Council) to attend a meeting to update you on developments and also to get your feedback and ideas on how to maximise the success of Hawke's Bay Trails for our region.

OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 2 WRAP (10.45pm – 2nd take)

Alison Shanks pushed her way into the top echelon of female pursuiters of all time with a record breaking effort at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill tonight.

Shanks produced a stunning 3:28.475 effort to claim the title, and shatter the New Zealand residents' record. Her time was more than a second under her previous best, set in winning her world championship title in Poland in 2009.

Coach Craig Palmer said the time would put her into the top six riders of all time.

This was followed up with a record performance from teammate Jesse Sergent who also set a new national record clocking 4:16.139 to win the men's 4000m individual pursuit.

It broke his own national record by half a second, beating teammate Peter Latham (4:21.483) in the final.

Shanks said she was delighted with the performance which shows she and the team pursuit teammates are on target leading in to next week's World Cup in Colombia and on to next year's Olympics.

"We are not peaking by any means. This shows we have good early season form and gives us real confidence looking ahead," shanks said.

"I've spent more time on the road and more time in the gym in the build-up and it shows we are well on track.

"It's just the second time I have been under 3:30. I have had so many rides in the 33.30s so this is a big breakthrough tonight."

Sergent said he was focussed on a top performance in what could be his final individual pursuit, as he moves his focus to the road after the team pursuit campaign to the London Olympics.

"I felt quite tired after the morning ride but had a good recovery and a sleep in the afternoon and felt really refreshed," Sergent said. "I wanted to get that record for sure and I wanted to take advantage with the track running fast.

"Overall I am really encouraged by things. That 3:55 with the team pursuit yesterday has not really sunk in and tonight was also really pleasing. We have had a very limited track build up to this, so overall I think we are in excellent shape."

The records also fell in the Under-19 ranks when Waimate's Dylan Kennett took out the 1000m time trial. Kennett, who set a national record in winning the individual pursuit yesterday, clocked 1:03.644 to claim the kilo time trial, which broke Eddie Dawkins' 2007 of 1:03.700.

Auckland's Georgina Wilson, eighth at the world championships in Moscow this year, took out the women's under-19 final, clocking 2:30.257, a new personal best.

Outstanding Southland-based sprinter Natasha Hansen made it three from three when she came from the rear of the field to dominate the final of the women's keirin after winning the team sprint and the 500m time trial.

She is looking to recover before chasing a national record in the individual sprint on Thursday.

The fans were treated to a star of the future in world junior champion Caleb Ewan from Australia who won the under-19 omnium, winning four of the six events including all three tonight – the individual pursuit, scratch race and time trial. He finished clear of Nelson's Kristoff Ford.

Te Awamutu's Hayden McCormick rounded out the evening with a brilliant performance, the only rider to lap the field in winning the Under-19 points race over 20kms.

OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 2 MORNING QUALIFYING

New Zealand's world championship medallists Jesse Sergent and Alison Shanks set themselves up for another super-fast night on the second day of the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill.

Shanks, the 2009 world champion and current individual pursuit silver medallist, clocked 3:31.954 which was 1.7secs outside her national record. She will be hoping for a warm environment at the ILT Velodrome again tonight to provide an ideal atmosphere for fast time as she looks to her national record of 3:30.180 when she takes on fellow pursuit teammate Jaime Nielsen (3:38.503) in the gold medal ride tonight.

Fellow BikeNZ pursuit team members Lauren Ellis (3:40.363) and Rushlee Buchanan (3:42.530) will fight it out for the bronze medal.

World silver medallist Sergent produced a superb sub 4:20 performance to be fastest in qualifying in the men's 4000m individual pursuit.

The Radioshack Nissan Trek rider clocked 4:18.634 to be less than two seconds outside his national record, and will meet compatriot Peter Latham in the gold medal ride tonight. Latham recorded a personal best 4:19.410 to win through to the final while teammate Sam Bewley (4:21.644) meets Australia's Edward Bissaker (4:27.204) for the bronze medal.

In other racing, time trial and team sprint champion Natasha Hansen (Southland) is through to the semifinals of the keirin along with compatriots Paige Paterson (Auckland), Katie Schofield (Otago), Kate Dunlevey (Auckland) and Vanessa Quinn (Auckland) along with a strong Australian contingent.

Auckland's Georgina Wilson went within a whisker of the track record in qualifying top in the 2000m individual pursuit. Wilson clocked 2:31.651 to best the other six competitors, just 25/100ths of a second outside Gemma Dudley's track record and 4/10ths of a second outside her personal best, set in finishing eighth at the world junior championships.

She takes on Otago's Alysha Keith, second fastest on 2:36.079, in tonight's gold medal ride, while Australia's Stacey Riedel (2:36.124) meets compatriot Holly Takos (2:37.305) in the bronze medal ride.

World junior champion Caleb Ewan from Australia extended his lead in the under-19 omnium after winning the individual pursuit this morning, the fourth of the six-race event. He is on seven points, clear of fellow Australian Jack McCulloch on 17 with Tayla Harrison (Christchurch) and Kristoff Ford (Nelson) sharing third place on 19 points.

OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 1 FINALS WRAP (8.30pm)

New Zealand's team pursuit cyclists issued a loud Olympic warning shot with world class winning performances on the opening night of the Oceania Track Championships in Invercargill.

The women's trio of Alison Shanks, Lauren Ellis and Jaime Nielsen produced the fastest time in the world at sea level of 3:19.759, smashing the record they set in the morning by a further four seconds.

Their time was only 19/100ths of a second – a blink of the eye - outside the world record set by the USA at altitude in Mexico.

"We were conservative on schedule early because we were up against a strong Australian team and had to secure the win first. I thought the girls were really on schedule for a top time and so I let them go over the last kilometre," said coach Dayle Cheatley.

"The best thing is that our second team also produced a world class time and so we have six girls all capable of producing quality performances at the highest level."

Minutes later the men's quartet of Marc Ryan, Sam Bewley, Aaron Gate and Jesse Sergent shattered their previous best by more than two seconds in winning the 4000m men's team pursuit final in a time of 3:55.295.

The men produced a superbly judged ride, unleashing in the final kilometre.

"We had initially looked at going 3:58 but saw the girls had gone a lot quicker so we re-thought our goals," said Bewley. "It gives us a lot of confidence going into the World Cup in Cali. We have been around the 3:58 mark for a few years so this is a big breakthrough."

It marked a stunning night at the super-quick ILT Velodrome helped with a warm evening in the city.

The records kept tumbling with Southland-based Natasha Hansen and Otago's Katie Schofield rewriting one of the oldest records, when they won the women's team sprint final.

They clocked 34.401 to win the final over Australia's Rikki Belder and Tennille Falappi (35.768) to claim the record, previously set in 2007 by Fiona Carswell and Jocelyn Rastrick of 34.632.

Waimate's Dylan Kennett set the first record of the night when he won the under-19 3000m individual pursuit clocking 3:20.435 to beat Australia's Tirian McManus. Kennett, who won a silver medal in the omnium at the recent world junior championships, was 5/100s of a second inside the 2009 record of Canterbury's Michael Vink.

The men's team sprint trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Simon van Velthooven set the fastest ever time for a New Zealand combination in their morning qualifying ride. They topped qualifiers in 44.074 which eclipsed their previous best of 44.118s set at the Cali World Cup last year.

Mitchell jumped superbly in the final with Webster slightly back but Van Velthooven was four lengths off the back and while he produced a strong return to win the race, it no doubt cost a further record. They won in 44.468 from the Australian trio of Dan Ellis, Jason Niblett and Peter Lewis who clocked 44.870.

Results:

Men:

Elite, team sprint gold medal: New Zealand (Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster, Simon Van Velthooven) 44.468, 1; Australia (Dan Ellis, Jason Niblett, Peter Lewis) 44.870, 2.

Bronze medal: Australia (Alex Bird, Andrew Taylor, James Glasspool) 38.018, 3; New Zealand (Matt Archibald, Eddie Dawkins, James Vercoe) 40.190, 4.

4000m team pursuit: gold medal: New Zealand (Sam Bewley, Jesse Sergent, Aaron Gate, Marc Ryan) 3:55.295, 1 (NZ Record); Australia (Scott Law, Jackson Law, Edward Bissaker, Peter Loft) no time.

Bronze medal: New Zealand (Wes Gough, Myron Simpson, Pete Latham, Cam Karwowski) won by overtaking.

Under-19:

3000m individual pursuit, gold medal ride: Dylan Kennett (NZL) 3:20.435, 1 (NZ record); Tirian McManus (AUS) 3:23.282, 2.

Bronze medal ride: Hayden McCormick (NZL) 3:23.595, 3; Joshua Harrison (AUS) 3:25.023, 4.

Women:

Elite Team Sprint gold medal: New Zealand (Katie Schofield, Natasha Hansen) 34.401, 1 (NZ record); Australia (Rikki Belder, Tennille Falappi) 35.768, 2.

Bronze medal: Australia (Maddison Law, Cassandra Kell) 36.158, 3; New Zealand (Stephanie McKenzie, Vanessa Quinn) 36.210, 4.

Elite 3000m team pursuit, gold medal: New Zealand (Rushlee Buchanan, Alison Shanks, Lauren Ellis) 3:19.759, 1 (NZ Record); Australia (Ashlee Ankudinoff, Amy Cure, Kate Bates) 3:29.211, 2.

Bronze medal: New Zealand (Rushlee Buchanan, Kaytee Boyd, Gemma Dudley) 3:24.449, 3; New Zealand U19 (Georgina Wilson, Racquel Sheath, Georgia Williams) 3:33.612 4.

Under-19

Team Sprint gold medal: New Zealand (Kate Dunlevey, Paige Paterson) 36.862, 1; Australia (Allee Proud, Rebecca Dunn) 36.960, 2.

More results to come.

OCEANIA TRACK CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 1 QUALIFYING

It proved a record morning for New Zealand cyclists on the first day of the UCI Oceania Track Championships in Invercargill today.

The women's team pursuit and men's team sprint both set national records, while the men's team pursuit and women's sprint went within a touch of records in the qualifying session at the ILT Velodrome.

The trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Simon van Velthooven set the fastest ever time for a New Zealand team sprint combination. They topped qualifiers in 44.074 which broke the national residents' record as well as eclipsing their previous best time of 44.118s set at the World Cup in Cali, Colombia last year.

They take on Australia's Dan Ellis, Jason Niblett and Peter Lewis in the gold medal ride tonight.

The combination of Alison Shanks, Lauren Ellis and Jaime Nielsen produced an emphatic morning ride to set a New Zealand resident record in qualifying in the women's 3000m team pursuit. They clocked 3:23.452 which was more than three seconds inside the previous best set at the same meeting two years ago in Invercargill. They were two seconds faster than the Australian combination of two-time Olympian Kate Bates, Ashlee Ankudinoff and Amy Cure who clocked 3:25.666.

The BikeNZ quartet of Marc Ryan, Sam Bewley, Aaron Gate and Jesse Sergent went under the four minute mark to top qualifiers in the men's 4000m team pursuit.

They clocked 3:59.568, one of a handful of occasions they have gone under four minutes in a morning qualifying ride, and only a second outside the New Zealand record.

The second BikeNZ combination of Wes Gough, Myron Simpson, Peter Latham and Cam Karwowski were second fastest in 4:05.257 ahead of the Australians (Scott Law, Jackson Law, Edward Bissaker, Peter Loft) in 4:10.891. However under Oceania rules, the final is contested by the fastest qualifier from each nation.

Southland-based Natasha Hansen and Otago's Katie Schofield came within a whisker of a long standing national record in qualifying in the team sprint. The pair was timed at 34.665 seconds to top qualifiers, only 3/10ths of a second off the 2007 record of Fiona Carswell and Jocelyn Rastrick.

They will take on Australian's Under-19 pairing of Riki Belder and Tennille Falappi (35.947) for the gold medal tonight.

The finals session begins at 6.30pm.

Roulston to focus on road cycling career

New Zealand road cycling champion Hayden Roulston has withdrawn from the track squad to focus his attentions on his road racing career.

Roulston, who has recently signed a contract with the powerful pro tour team, Radioshack Nissan Trek, had also harboured hopes of making a successful return to track cycling in a bid to make the team for the London Olympics.

After an intense week of training with the BikeNZ track squad in Invercargill, the double Beijing Olympic medallist decided to withdraw ahead of the UCI Oceania Track Championships starting tomorrow at the ILT Velodrome.

BikeNZ men's endurance coach Tim Carswell said Roulston had been a valuable addition back into the track cycling ranks but he fully understands and supports the decision to concentrate on his road career.

"The requirements to be a successful rider for a Pro Tour road team as well as prepare for an Olympic Games on the track are formidable," Carswell said.

"Hayden has worked really hard this week and has shown signs of the sort of training numbers needed at this level on the track.

"At the same time he has realised what it will take in terms of time both for key competitions and specific training for him to be considered for selection on the track for London.

"The Olympic selection policy requires riders to prove their capabilities in the major World Cup and World Championship meets.

"However Hayden's new road contract involves him for the early part of the season in particular and after weighing up all of these factors, he has come to the conclusion that he can't fulfil the requirements demanded for both road and track."

Mr Carswell said that Roulston had decided that it was better to withdraw now and take a break before focussing on his preparations for the spring classics road racing season in Europe.

Gentle Annie

Congratulations to all those who rode the inaugural “Gentle Annie”.

We hope to grow this into a large and iconic event.

All of you will be recorded on a “role of honour” as the first cyclists to ride this event.

The ‘spot prize’ vouchers from Marewa Epic Cycles will be announced this Saturday at race briefing. These vouchers will be given to one male and one female rider who rode part or all of the Gentle Annie.

There was a shortage of “27s” in the Bay as riders anticipated the climbs and participants were not disappointed to have bought the gears – they soon realised that the pre-race information from race starter, Ken MacKenzie, was extremely accurate. There were long climbs. There steep climbs. And there were long, steep climbs.

Congratulations to Ashleigh Neave and Blair Heney, the first woman (3 hours 42 minutes) and man (3 hours 12 minutes) to reach the finish line.

Ride of the Day goes to Lantern Rouge, Fred Staples, whose determination proved this event is possible for riders from across the grades. Fred completed the ride in 5 hours 34 minutes.

Thank you again to our sponsors, Marewa Epic Cycles and Tour of the Bay.

Thank you also to RCC committee for organising the ‘after-match’ meal.

The BikeNZ Napier Commuter Cycle Challenge 2011.

WOW, what a fantastic week of cycling and today was the final breakfast of the BikeNZ Napier Commuter Cycle Challenge 2011.

Thanks to Hawkes Bay Regional Council for hosting the final breakfast this morning – what a great turnout and BBQ for breakie!  Thanks to Pip and her team at HBRC for helping organise this and Neil for manning the BBQ of eggs, sausages and bacon!  We had 70 cyclists ride in this morning to a very sunny welcome!  We hope you enjoyed, great to see so many new faces.  Keep up the great work of inspiring others to commute to work.  Over the week 355 breakfast treats were given to you over the week and many spot prizes were won.  We have had 184 riders registered in Napier over the past 3x years!

Hawkes Bay Regional Council is behind the NZ Cycle trails here in Hawke's Bay, working alongside the other councils and groups to help link our cycling networks and provide more opportunities to explore our region by bike.  Don't forget to check out their website, with many new pathways opening before the end of the year.  If you want to maps for the pathways ask HBRC or to download check out   www.hbrc.govt.nz/GetIntoIt/Recreation/CyclingandWalkingTrails  Some of these pathways are well worth including in your commuting routes – if you can.  They are both scenic, pretty, relaxing and away from traffic - NICE.  The pathways are such a fantastic way to get around Hawkes Bay!

Today was the draw for the Grand prize. If you had ridden and registered for 4 out of 5 days you were in with a chance.  The Grand
Prize is a weekend in Taupo.  The prize is a luxury nights' accommodation, dinner and breakfast, at Bayview Wairakei Resort, Taupo!  And the winner was………………………………………………………………..

Congratulations to Kevin Kalff, eh hem District Commander Kevin Kalff.  I'm sure you will enjoy this Kevin.  And well deserved – a keen cyclist and commuter – good luck for the Lake Taupo Challenge in a few weeks Kevin!  Great to see lots of the boys in blue supporting the challenge and commuting to work this week, we appreciate your great work in our community.

Thanks to all the businesses, organisations and people who have supported the challenge this year.  Big thanks to Chris Tremain, Napier City Council, Bennett & Pearson, Fishbike, Kathmandu, SportHB, Soul Cycle Repairs, Arataki Honey, Hawkes Bay Today, Classic Hits, Bayview Wairakei Resort Taupo, CAN and Hawkes Bay Regional Council.  And thanks to all the teams within these groups for providing breakfasts and prizes to the commuters of Napier.  Remember to thank these organisations for their support if you ever get the chance.  It's great to see local councils supporting cycling initiatives, cyclists and giving back to the local community.  As cyclists in the community we appreciate all your support – thanks.

It's been a great week and wonderful to see all your smiling faces again, keep up the cycle commuting – you guys are champions!

Kind regards,

Vicki

Dudley to contest World Cup cycling opener

Levin cyclist Gemma Dudley is BikeNZ's only representative in the first of the UCI World Cup track series that begins in Kazakhstan this weekend.

The World Cup comprises four rounds and will be one of the final qualification opportunities for next year's London Olympics.

The series goes to Astana for the first time this weekend to be followed by Cali (Colombia) on 1-3 December, Beijing (China) on 13-15 January and the Olympic track test event in London on 17-19 February.

BikeNZ must be represented in every round of the World Cup and with many of the riders building towards this month's Oceania Championships, it was considered an ideal opportunity for Dudley.

The 21 year old will compete in the six-event omnium, which is the new event on the programme for next year's Olympics.

"It's a good opportunity for Gemma to gain experience, both racing at this level and competing in the Omnium," said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott.

"Gemma had a solid performance at the world championships in this event and is a key rider in our plans going forward.

"It also allows our top ranked Omnium rider Jo Kiesanowski to focus on preparations for the Oceania Championships and upcoming World Cups."

The World Cup programme has been modified this year to include the 10 Olympic events – five each for men and women – as well as five events that will feature at the UCI World Championships in Melbourne next year. These are the 500m and points race for women and the individual pursuit, scratch race and Madison for men.

RCC has received a request from a member of the public to mindful about drafting behind vehicles. Although the cyclists could have been anyone (that is, not necessarily RCC members), this is a reminder that drafting behind tractors towing equipment is unsafe and often alarms or bothers the tractor drivers.
