UCI ROAD CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS- DAY 6 WRAP
A major crash five laps from the finish on the tight Copenhagen circuit ended New Zealand’s hopes in the UCI Road Cycling World Championships today.
The trio of Julian Dean, Jack Bauer and Greg Henderson were among approximately 100 riders affected by a major crash that blocked the road 76 kms from the finish of the 266km elite men’s race.
The group, including the kiwis, time trial world champion Tony Martin (GER) and defending champion Thor Hushovd (NOR), lost more than a minute before they could get going and by then the elastic had been cut to a flying main peloton.
With speeds up to 50kph in the main bunch, the crash-affected group were never able to mount a serious challenge, forced to ride through to the finish several minutes behind winner Mark Cavendish who prospered from a relentless Great Britain attack.
A pesky break, which grew to more than seven minutes, was only quelled on the last of 17 lap as Australia and Great Britain worked best to deliver their sprinters to the front. Cavendish latched on to the Australian train to edge out his fellow HTC Highroad teammate Matt Goss in the final blistering sprint to the line.
It was disappointing for the New Zealand riders who had been sitting comfortably in the massive peloton on the narrow 14km circuit in Copenhagen.
“I really wanted to do a good result today to show the New Zealand selectors that I am able and capable for the Olympics so it was disappointing for that regard,” said Julian Dean.
“I’m really disappointed and I know that Greg and Jack feel the same because we all had good legs today.
“The crash just split the field and we were stuck there for more than a minute and the peloton just split in two basically. It was the wrong place at the wrong time.
“I had just taken my last feed with 75km to go. When you take your feed bag you lose a lot of places in the peloton and after that we came down the decent the crash happened.
“We did try to get back for a few laps but there were a number of threats in the group and anyone with riders in the front does not want to work to bring any potential threats back up to the field. At the same time the pace was really on at the front and so with some teams not helping we were doomed really.
“Looking at the result and talking with Hendy, we know we had the capability to have featured in that finish which makes it doubly disappointing and frustrating.”
Results, elite men, 266km: Mark Cavendish (GBR) 5:40.27, 1; Matt Goss (AUS) same time, 2; Andre Greipel (GER) st, 3; Fabian Cancellara (SUI) st, 4; Jurgan Roelandts (BEL) st, 5; Romain Feillu (FRA) st, 6; Borut Bozic (SLO) st, 7; Edvald Boasson Hagen (NOR) st, 8; Oscar Freire (ESP) st, 9; Tyler Farrar (USA) st, 10. Also New Zealanders: Greg Henderson 5:49:21, 118; Jack Bauer st, 121; Julian Dean st, 152.

UCI ROAD CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 5 WRAP
The BikeNZ rider, who won the silver medal in the time trial earlier in the week, came down when a rider fell in front of her during a frantic final lap of the 140km race.
Villumsen joined with an Italian rider to chase down a late break from Canada’s Olympic speed skater Clara Hughes on the penultimate lap. It sparked activity in the peloton in an otherwise lack-lustre race, not wanting the classy kiwi pursuiter to join with the powerful Canadian.
The New Zealander was reeled shortly before Hughes was swept up by the big bunch, with Villumsen still poised for a solid finish. But she was left with nowhere to go when a rider fell in front of her. Villumsen suffered some slight injuries in the crash but managed to fix her bike sufficiently to finish more than two minutes behind the winner, Giorgia Bronzini. The Italian successfully defended her world title in a fierce sprint from five-time runner up Marianne Vos (NED) and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (GER).
“It was disappointing for Linda who had ridden well all day,” said BikeNZ Director Sportif, Andy Reid. “It is difficult for a break away to stick on this course which does not offer many opportunities and where the average speed is high.
“Linda had positioned herself well and went in pursuit of Hughes with one other rider after the Canadian had pushed out to a 40 second advantage going into the final lap.
“But the teams of the sprinters reacted and caught her just before she had bridged to the leader. Linda was still in reasonable position for a solid finish until the crash. She has a sore arm which needs some further medical attention and has a few bruises.”
Earlier the New Zealanders were swamped by the teams of the big sprinters in the junior men’s race over 128kms.
Te Awamutu’s Hayden McCormick and Auckland’s Dion Smith had been prominent in the chase of two riders in the break amid high speeds and a flurry of attacks. With the power of numbers, the strong French squad dominated with an eventual five strong break clearing away to decide the final sprint won by Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier.
Smith was the best of the BikeNZ riders in the peloton at 41st place with some riders affected by a crash near the end of a race when a German rider misjudged a corner and brought down more than 15 riders in the process.
Meanwhile New Zealand’s Julian Dean believes breakaways will be difficult in tomorrow’s elite men’s race over 266km.
“Jack (Bauer), Greg (Henderson) and myself road the course this morning and we were riding at 45kph ourselves just on a training lap. The speeds will be very high and there are not many chances to get away,” Dean said.
“Getting into a position near the finish will be the key but if we can do that, then I am in good shape and confident I can do well.”
Results:
Elite women, 140km: Giorgia Bronzini (ITA) 3:21.28, 1; Marianne Vos (NZED) same time, 2; Ina Teutenberg (GER) same time, 3; Nicole Cooke (GBR) same time, 4; Julia Martisova (RUS) same time, 5. Also: Linda Villumsen (NZL) at 2:37, 111.
Junior men, 126km: Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier (FRA) 2:48:58, 1; Martin Degreve (BEL) same time, 2; Steven Lammertink (NED) same time, 3; Florian Senechal (FRA) at 3 seconds, 4; Rick Zabel (GER) same time, 5. Also New Zealanders: Dion Smith, same time, 41; Fraser Gough at 26s, 95; Hayden McCormick at 8:38, 130; James Oram same time, 132; Alex Frame dnf

UCI ROAD CYCLING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – DAY 2 NZ WRAP
Star kiwi cyclist Linda Villumsen and young hope James Oram created an historic double medal winning day for New Zealand at the UCI Road World Championships in Copenhagen today.
Both won silver medals in the elite women and junior men time trials respectively, the first time BikeNZ has won two medals at the same World Championships.
The same three elite women shared the medals in the time trial today as at Melbourne last year but on a vastly different course with Geelong's hills compared with flat, windy and wet conditions at Copenhagen.
It proved an emotional day for Villumsen, the Danish-born New Zealander who was thrilled to win her third medal in a row in the time trial after bronze medals for Denmark in 2009 and in her first ride for New Zealand last year.
"It will be the same three of us in the medals next year but it will be my turn for the gold," Villumsen said.
"It was special for me today for sure. I had my family and friends here supporting me too. I told my brother to go in the hardest part of the course and yell for me. It was good support for me from everybody."
She found the conditions more trying than anticipated but it did not change her approach.
"The first lap in the wet was a little bit tricky because you never know how fast you can take the corners but the second lap was okay because you knew and none of them were dangerous.
"It was harder than I thought it would be. That was to my advantage. It was a strong head wind which was pretty bad, it seemed like a climb.
"I didn't change my tactics though. I always ride the same not really with tactics but to ride as fast as I can and see how long I can last for.
"After the first lap people were cheering a lot more and so you knew they had been told of my time but apart from that it was not easy to understand how the others were doing behind me."
Villumsen, who rides for the Dutch AA Drink professional team, hit the lead in the competition as the eighth to last rider off on the technical two lap 27.8km time trial, clocking 37:29.11 to eclipse Canada's former Olympic speed skater Clara Hughes.
Her time lasted until the penultimate ride from 2004 world champion Judith Arndt from Germany who blitzed the second lap after being only the eighth fastest at the first time split half way around the first lap.
Pooley had to settle for third ahead of Canadians Tara Whitten, the two-time world omnium champion on the track, and Hughes.
Villumsen has four days break before she competes in the road race as the sole New Zealand representative.
Earlier the 18 year old Oram surprised himself with his medal winning performance in the junior men's race over the same 27.8km course.
Oram, for the former Westlake Boys rider, was off as the 10th rider in a 55-strong field, producing a stunning effort to clock 35:07.68 to claim the lead.
He had to wait nervously for two hours before his time was beaten.
"It was pretty nerve wracking that was for sure. I really needed to go to the toilet but they held me there as the leader.
"I came in here thinking that a top-10 performance would be great. And if I was lucky then top-five would be an absolute dream. So to get a silver medal is pretty crazy. It's not really sunk in yet."
Oram said he did not have any pre-conceived tactics.
"I generally just ride as strongly and as hard as I can. It was quite technical and was a bit windy but the rain did not come while we rode."
It took a huge effort from hometown Dane Mads Wurtz Schmidt to edged out Oram by just four seconds to win the gold.
Oram, who has competed for the Pure Black Racing Development team this year, won the best young rider classification at the Tour de L'Abitibi in Canada racing for BikeNZ.
Buoyed by his performance today, Oram believes the young New Zealand team can do well in the road race in three days time.
"We have all ridden together a lot for New Zealand and we all know each other well. I think we can do really well here."
Tomorrow is the elite men's road race with world track pursuit silver medallist Jesse Sergent and 2009 national road champion Jack Bauer in action for New Zealand in a 65-strong field headed by four time world and Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara. The stellar field includes top time triallists including Tony Martin (GER), David Millar and Olympic pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins (both GBR), American star prospect Taylor Phinney and current world pursuit champion Jack Bobridge (AUS).
Results:
Elite women time trial, 27.8km: Judith Arndt (GER) 37:07.38, 1; Linda Villumsen (NZL) 37:29.11, 2; Emma Pooley (GBR) 37:31.51, 3; Tara Whitten (CAN) 37:33.54, 4; Clara Hughes (CAN) 37:44.17, 5.
Junior men time trial, 27.8km: Mads Wurtz Schmidt (DEN) 35:07.68, 1; James Oram (NZL) 35:11.79, 2; David Edwards (AUS) 35:28.47, 3; Markus Faglum-Karlsson (SWE) 35:40.59, 4; Juriy Vasyliv (GER) 35:46.69, 5.
Ramblers Ed Note: Fraser finished a creditable 14th from a field of 54 after starting later in the day and 1:23 down on the winner at 45.676 Km/hr. full results juniors http://www.uci.ch/Modules/BUILTIN/getObject.asp?MenuId=&ObjTypeCode=FILE&type=FILE&id=NzMyMTk&LangId=1

Best Wishes to Fraser in Copenhagen
All the best, Fraser, we’ll be cheering for you!
Silver and Bronze for RCC: North Island Intermediate School Cycling Champs
Cadel Heney had an outstanding race in the yr 7 Boys category claiming a silver medal. Cadel had broken away with the eventual winner, splitting the field in the strong winds.
Sam Thorpe-Loversuch claimed a bronze in the yr 8 Boys category. He had been off school (ill) during the week and was lucky to be competing. Sam's sister (Ashleigh) rode in the yr 7 Girls race, even though she is a yr 6 pupil. She put in a gutsy performance to finish 11th.
Noah Mason-Smith (CHB) also rode well to finish mid pack in the yr 8 Boys race.
Thank you from the Oliver Family
Brenda would have enjoyed the atmosphere at the afternoon tea in the church hall. As soon as I entered, I felt we were back in the old Puketapu hall after a bike race in the early days. It certainly brought back many memories, especially with the familiar faces present. I think that an event like we have witnessed also shows how strong the local cycling community is.
Thanking you
Robert Oliver
Club Uniform: Order NOW
Saturday Racing: Sprint Finishes
The cost of application to council for a road closure is prohibitive for a Saturday race – so this is not an option.
The costs of “reduced speed” zones around sprint areas are significant in terms of time, volunteer hours and additional road signage. They would also require council approval filed for each separate finish.
Therefore, under no circumstances will sprint finishes take up the full width of the road and any riders unable to abide by these club rules will automatically be disqualified. Repeat offenders will face the prospect of being stood down for a number of races.
2011 Tour de Vineyards
This year two categories have been added with an elite woman's race, with equal prize money as well as a team category. The race also caters for all age groups with a category for Masters1 upwards.

UCI ROAD WORLD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS – NZ WRAP DAY 1
New Zealand riders Jason Christie and Georgia Williams have made strong starts to the BikeNZ campaign at the UCI Road World Cycling Championships in Copenhagen today.
Christie (Ashburton) and Williams (Auckland) both places sixth in the time trials through the streets of downtown Copenhagen, the opening races of this year's world championships.
The 20 year old Christie was 12th through the first time check and worked his way to ninth fastest after the first lap at the 17.6km mark. He continued to lift his pace to improve to place sixth in 44:47.61 for the 35.2km test won by Luke Durbridge, a member of Australia's world champion team pursuit combination on the track earlier this year, in a stunning 42:47.13.
The Ashburton rider was pleased with his performance in tricky conditions.
"It was pretty good. I think it could have been a little bit better but I am happy with sixth in the world for under-23s. I can't complain with that," Christie said.
"It was windy today. Because it was through the city I didn't think there would be as much wind but with open roads it was quite windy. It was fine but cold though. It was big wide roads but technical in parts with some cobble sections too.
"I was told to start conservatively but in the end of the day you just have to ride hard. It's the only way to get up there. I was probably one of the fastest on the course over the last half of the second lap."
There was plenty of support for the riders in the opening races of the world championships in this cycle-centric city where 60 per cent of the population ride bikes, most of them as their primary means of daily transport.
"There were a lot of Danish people out today supporting on the side of the roads. This is an amazing city for cycling with so many people out with city or town bikes all the time here. It's unreal. You don't see that back home."
It's Christie's only ride of the championships and he will now return home after enjoying a strong season in Europe riding for the Chinese-owned Marco Polo Cycling team along with Timaru's Marc Ryan as well as riding with the BikeNZ Under-23 team and backing Julian Dean at the London Olympic Test event where he was the leading kiwi.
"I've learned some more every year and I feel I can make some big progress in the next year or two and step up again. I'm still young and have a few more years still at under-23s."
He will prepare for the Tour of Southland where he will support Hayden Roulston and then build up for next year's road season where he hopes to gain selection to a professional team in Europe.
Williams (Auckland) finished sixth in the 13.9km junior women's time trial to continue a strong season.
She won a silver medal in the individual pursuit and was fourth in the team pursuit at the recent junior track world championships in Moscow.
The teenager started strongly to be fifth fastest through the 6.7km time check, 12 seconds off the top ranked rider, but slowed over the second half of the 13.9km circuit to clock 20:02.58, which was 34 seconds behind winner Jessica Allen (Australia).
Tomorrow Linda Villumsen is in action in the elite women's time trial, while James Oram and Fraser Gough will compete in the junior men time trial.
Results:
Men's under-23 time trial, 35.2 km: Luke Durbridge (Aus) 42min 47.13sec, 1; Rasmus Christian Quaade (Den) at 35.68sec, 2; Michael Hepburn (Aus) 46.47, 3. Also: Jason Christie (NZL) 2:00.48, 6.
Junior Women time trial, 13.9 km: Jessica Allen (Aus) 19min 18.63sec, 1; Elinor Barker (GBR) at 1.84sec, 2; Mieke Kroger (Ger) 2.80, 3. Also: Georgia Williams (NZL) 43.95, 6.

Fraser Gough in U19 team for World Road Championships
Seven-time Tour de France cyclist Julian Dean will spearhead a small but potent team in this month's UCI Road World Championships in Denmark.
Dean (Garmin Cervelo) will be joined by fellow Pro Tour rider Greg Henderson (Team Sky) and Jack Bauer (Endura Racing) to form the three-strong men's team for the world championships in Copenhagen on 21-25 September.
Radioshack's Jesse Sergent and Bauer will compete in the time trial, while Linda Villumsen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl ) is the sole woman, competing in both the road race and time trial.
Director Sportif Andy Reid said selection for the three spots has been one of the toughest in recent times.
"We now have a number of riders in Pro Tour Teams and other racing to a high level both in Europe and USA," Reid said.
"The course was also a key factor in our selections, with the race likely to favour the sprinters.
"Julian and Greg are world class sprinters who have had excellent success this year. We needed a strong rider on flat circuits to ride for them, have the potential to ride down breaks and do the donkey-work.
"Jack Bauer has proved he is extraordinarily strong and all three have been in top form this year."
Henderson has had two wins this year on stage two of the Paris-Nice and stage three of the Tour of California; Dean was part of the Garmin team that won the team time trial and finished top team at the Tour de France and Bauer won stage two of the Tour of Utah.
Sergent has won three individual time trials this year in the prologue at the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen, the Eneco Tour and Tour du Poitiou Charentes where he won overall honours while Villumsen won the bronze medal in the time trial in 2009 and 2010 as well as the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The BikeNZ team is:
Elite Female: Linda Villumsen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl, Auckland).
Elite Male: Jack Bauer (Endura Racing, Nelson), Julian Dean (Garmin Cervelo, Rotorua), Greg Henderson (Team Sky, Melbourne), Jesse Sergent (Radioshack, Feilding).
U23 Male: George Bennett (Trek Livestrong, Nelson), Jason Christie (Ashburton)
Tom David (UCS Crabbe Performance, Auckland), James Williamson (Pure Black Racing, Alexandra).
U19 Female: Georgia Williams (Auckland), Sophie Williamson (Alexandra).
U19 Male Alex Frame (Christchurch), Fraser Gough (Havelock North),
James Oram (Pure Black Racing, Auckland), Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu), Dion Smith (Pure Black Racing, Auckland)
Staff: Andy Reid (Director Sportif), Sarah Blake and Hans Sente (Soigneur), Craig Geater, Goncar Mindaugas (Mechanics), John Dean (U19 Team Manager), Jono Hailstone (U19 Coach).

The same bike is required to be ridden throughout the Yunca Tour.
This also will help the large contingent of Australian riders who will not incur the expense of bringing a specialist TT bike or extra gear over for such a short first stage.
