SportHB:Rider Profile
Paul 'Ironbolo' Tiati grew up in Camberely, Hastings. He developed Type 2 diabetes and also suffered a prolapsed disc three years ago. Instead of becoming "chained to a wheelchair", Paul decided to explore options for getting fit again... and so he started cycling. His two brothers often ride with him as 'support crew', and Paul now often competes in local duathalons and triathalons (where he got the nickname 'Ironbolo'). Paul borrows a bike from SportHB and is currently raising money to own his own hand-cycle.
SportHB supports cyclists with disabilities when possible and has managed to secure two handcycles along with another recumbent bike which are now available for all Hawke's Bay people to use. These bikes are suitable for both smaller and larger framed cyclists.
Paul wants to inspire and encourage other people, who like him may have developed health issues which may mean a life in a wheelchair. He says they must understand that their life is not over and that they can do anything if they set their mind to it – because every day our lives are a work in progress.
If you wish to find out more about the bicycles available for loan from SportHB, please contact Mike Goodacre 8459336.
