Westley Gough Leads Out RaboDirect New Zealand teammate Aaron Gate
BikeNZ’s leading under-23 riders have enjoyed double success in one of Australia’s leading events on the prestigious Tour of the Murray River in Australia today.
Auckland’s Myron Simpson took out this morning’s third stage criterium at Numurkah, two and a half hours north of Melbourne while fellow RaboDirect New Zealand teammate Aaron Gate took out the afternoon’s fourth stage over 82kms to nearby Nathalia.
The team, comprising BikeNZ’s leading under-23 endurance track riders, are completing a successful five month campaign in Europe, stopping off for a final event in Australia. BikeNZ has used the campaign as a build-up towards the track season as these riders push for selection in the team for the London Olympics.
The morning criterium was well set up on the tight 850km lap circuit, with Timaru’s Shane Archbold powering to the front with two corners remaining to lead-out Simpson for the comfortable win.
The afternoon stage was short but strong cross winds made it challenge. The expected break came with 10kms to go, with both Wes Gough and Gate making it safely into the small leading bunch. The Hawkes Bay rider showed his experience to lead the peloton into the formal corner to set things up for Gate to sprint clear, winning emphatically. He has pushed provisionally up to third place on general classification after four stages of the 850kms tour over eight days.
“It’s been a great day for the team,” said Director Sportif Gordon McCauley. “This morning’s stage was so tight that we knew we had to have both riders in front by the second to last corner and they did it well.
“The afternoon was brutal in the wind and we did well to get two up into the break that we knew would come and from there Wes was excellent and Gatey was much too good for them.”
Simpson said the team was in good spirits after the long campaign and pleased with their form.
“The boys were really good today. They got together with a few laps to go and the lead out was perfect,” said Simpson. “I didn’t have to beat up into the wind until the final 100m before the line. They just did it perfectly.
“This is our last road race as a team so we are keen to do well. Then we have a little bit of power work to do as a track-specific stuff for October.
“It’s been a long five months but we had a break in the middle and a good training camp so it was split up well with lots of really tough racing in different countries. We are all riding well and happy to get the results.”
Tomorrow is a 71km stage in the morning from Echuca to Kyabram and 30km criterium in the afternoon in Rochester.

BikeNZ cyclist claims second Pro Tour stage victory in Europe
The 23 year old from Feilding managed to finish safely in the peloton to retain his overall advantage on general classification for his Radioshack team in the five-stage tour.
The day was not without drama after Sergent punctured 15km from the finish but teammates Robbie Hunter and close friend and fellow Olympian Sam Bewley rode themselves to a standstill to get the leader back into the peloton on the final stage, a 171km super-fast stage to Poitiers. Teammate Yaroslav Popovych had given up his wheel with the Radioshack support car too far back to offer a quick change.
Sergent, the world champion silver medallist in the individual pursuit, set up the overall honours with a strong performance to claim the time trial yesterday. He is expected to play a central role in BikeNZ’s Olympic hopes on the track in London next year and his victory on the road today followed a win earlier in the season in the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen.
“What an incredible day,” said Sergent. “When I flatted everything looked over as the peloton was split in different parts at that moment and the team car was too far behind.
“With the support of Robbie Hunter and Sam Bewley who rode themselves ‘empty’ we managed to come back.”
Team Sky, taking advantage of the puncture, pushed second placed Alex Dowset into the lead on the road before Sergent responded. After getting back on to the leading bunch, another teammate Michal Kwiatkowski, who was second on general classification, abandoned his overall hopes to ensure the New Zealander to bridge up to the flying Sky attackers.
“My teammate brought me to that final climb and then I had to sprint as fast as possible to the line. Fortunately Dowsett could only take six seconds.”
“This victory was a nice collective performance,” said team director Dirk Demol.
“Afterwards we controlled the race and they did a perfect job. Then in the final 15km when Jesse flatted it was almost all of that work for nothing, but it all ended well.”
“I am especially glad that it all worked out as the team worked so hard,” said Sergent. “This was one of the fastest stages of this Tour and racing in France is always pretty tough. Attacks, attacks, attacks.”
Sergent will start on Monday (NZ time) in the Grand Prix de Plouay
Overall Classification Tour International du Poitou-Charentes:
Jesse Sergent (NZL, Team RadioShack) 15:14:40; 1; Alex Dowsett (Team Sky) at 18sec, 2; Michal Kwiatkowski (Team RadioShack) at 18s, 3.

Memorial Ride 27th August – Saturday Race Cancelled
Many of you will know Brenda from your visits to The Hub Cycle Centre, which she ran with husband Rob.
Brenda and Rob were the ones who initiated our Saturday racing as we know it; taking registrations, organising grades, doing briefings (and Rob still managing to race as well). Ever since they first became involved with Ramblers, Brenda and Rob have always been strong supporters of the club, it's members and the events we run.
As a mark of respect, the Glengary/Apley race this Saturday 27th August is cancelled. A memorial ride, one lap of Apley, will be held instead. We invite you to join us.
Please meet at Puketapu School at the usual time and the memorial ride will begin at 2pm.
Tea, coffee, milo and biscuits will be available after the ride.
No race fee will be charged, however, gold coin donations for the Oliver family will be gratefully received. A start list will be available to sign, which will be given to the Oliver family.
Our thoughts are with Rob, and his family at this very sad time.
Winter Series
As tomorrow was to be the final race of the winter series and it is now cancelled in lieu of the memorial for Brenda Oliver, points in the Winter Series will stand as effective from last week’s race, 20th August. We are sure grades will understand given the circumstances.
Congratulations to the grade winners. We know you look forward to the start of the summer series next week. Remember to see Club Captain, Hilary, if you wish to change grades.

Fraser Gough and Jeremy Vennell Make Worlds Teams
BikeNZ have named five elite men from which a maximum three spots are available for the road race, over 17 laps and 266kms of a mostly flat course that is expected to suit the sprinters.
Dean, the two-time national champion, completed his seventh Tours de France this year earning a spot on the final podium with his Garmin Cervelo emerging as leading team.
The rest of the long list squad in elite men comprises Pro Tour riders Greg Henderson (Team Sky) and Jesse Sergent (Radioshack), and Pro Continental cyclists Jack Bauer (Endura Racing) and Jeremy Vennell (Team Bissell).
There are two places also available for the time trial.
Two-time world champion medallist Linda Villumsen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl), the Swedish-based pro tour team, is the only rider currently nominated for the elite women.
Four riders have also been selected for the Men’s Under-23 squad with three spots available for the road race, with two places open for the time trial.
“We are delighted that Julian Dean has put his hand up for selection for the World Championships. The course at Copenhagen should suit Julian’s sprinting skills,” said Bike NZ’s Road Director Sportif, Andy Reid.
“There has been plenty of interest from riders to be considered for selection for the World Championships. Obviously we expect that Julian will be the leader of this team and we will be looking at the make-up of the other riders to provide the best possible support for Julian.
“We have taken into consideration performances during the year, athlete’s access to high level competition in the build up to the world championships and riders’ current form.”
Reid said with the BikeNZ female endurance track cyclists not considered, as they prepare towards their campaign for Olympic track selection, Villumsen was the standout in the women’s ranks.
“Linda has won a bronze medal in the time trial at each of the last two world championships and is performing week in and week out at the highest level in Europe.
“Several other leading candidates like Rushlee Buchanan, Jo Kiesanowski and Alison Shanks are all involved in the track programme while the national road champion, Cath Cheatley is still recovering from injury.
“We have two riders competing in the Holland Ladies Tour and we will evaluate their form next week to determine if they are riding at a level that could provide support for Linda.”
The four riders named in the long list squad for under-23 selection include James Williamson (Pure Black, Alexandra), George Bennett (Trek Livestrong, Nelson), Tom David (UCS Crabbe Performance, Auckland) and Jason Christie (NZ U23, Ashburton).
“We have three spots available for the road race and two for the time trial for the Under-23s and will make a final selection for the time trial following the UCI 1.2 category Chrono Champenois in France in two weeks as a final guide.
“Overall we believe we will have strong representation for the World Championships when we confirm the final line-ups at pre race registration.”
The long list squads are: Elite men (3 road, 2 time trial available): Julian Dean Garmin Cervelo), Greg Henderson (Team Sky), Jack Bauer (Endura Racing), Jesse Sergent (Radioshack), Jeremy Vennell (Team Bissell).
Elite women (3 road, 2 time trial available): Linda Villumsen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl). (one or two riders may be added).
U23 Men (3 Road, 2 time trial available): James Williamson (Pure Black, Alexandra), George Bennett (Trek Livestrong, Nelson), Jason Christie (NZ U23, Ashburton), Tom David (UCS Crabbe Performance, Auckland)
Confirmed team for Junior Under-19, men: James Oram (Auckland, road and time trial), Fraser Gough (Havelock North, road and time trial), Dion Smith (Auckland, road), Alex Frame (Christchurch, road), Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu, road).
Junior women: Georgia Williams (Auckland, time trial and road), Sophie Williamson (Alexandra, road).

Race Fees: Come on people...
If you are wondering what your race fee is for – it contributes towards afternoon tea, venue hire and timing/results. Race fees do not always cover all race costs, and for every dollar we are short, that is less money available to assist riders in other ways.
Please pay your $3 each week – it’s not much for several healthy hours of entertainment, and a cuppa as well.

UCI World Junior Track Cycling Championships – Day 5 Wrap
New Zealand cyclists scored two more medals to complete a record haul on the fifth and final day of competition at the UCI World Junior Track Championships in Moscow.
Auckland's Georgia Williams won a silver medal in the women's 2000m individual pursuit while Christchurch's Alex Frame and Havelock North's Fraser Gough combined to bag silver in the Madison.
It completed an outstanding world championship for the BikeNZ contingent, finishing with four silver medals and six bronze for a record 10-medal haul, the most for any New Zealand team in the history of the championships.
It also bodes well for New Zealand riders who remain in the junior category with the country to host the 2012 UCI World Championships at Invercargill next year.
"Overall, I am extremely happy with the over performance of the 2011 junior worlds, very impressed with the team and the way they have gone about their campaign," said New Zealand coach Ross Machejefski.
"The most impressive aspect and reason they tasted so much success, was their professionalism and execution of race plans. We worked with them to create a race plan and they all following it through, which was so impressive for such young athletes. This really helped in the team and bunch race events where we saw a lot of success.
"The staff here have been exceptional and provided the very best of support to them.
"It will be a giant hurdle to top this next year, but with six of the team eligible to be back, the talent will definitely be there to give it a good go and put on a great show in front of the home support that we will get at Invercargill, which is a track they all know well."
Today Williams worked her way into the gold medal ride after a splendid qualifying performance of 2:27.456, a best time for New Zealand in the 2000m individual pursuit. She achieved it with a conservative opening kilometre but flew home in 1:11 for the second kilo, the fastest in the field.
The young Auckland rider, who was a member of the silver medal winning team pursuit in last year's championships in Italy, tried similar tactics in the final. However she was a second slower through the 1000m than in the morning and while she pushed hard, she had given the German Mieke Kroger too much of a start.
Kroger won in 2:27.113 with Williams claiming the silver medal in 2:28.714, with an average speed of over 48kph.
Frame, who rode the Madison at the Italy worlds last year, had not paired with Gough before the championships in the unique Madison, where one rider must be on the track at any time, swapping turns with a hand-to-hand slingshot action.
The pair had been in the bronze medal winning team pursuit combination while Frame had won a second medal in the Points race yesterday.
Australia took out the gold medal with 10 points, just edging the BikeNZ combination by a single point.
Auckland's Stephanie McKenzie, chasing an outstanding fourth medal at the championships, was just edged out of the podium position in the 500m time trial.
She clocked 36.333s in a strong ride to finish 4/10ths off the bronze medal in the event won by host nation Russia with Anastasiya Voynova setting a new world record in 34.768.
Day 5 Results:
Women's 500m time trial: Anastasiya Voynova (RUS) 34.768, 1 (World Record); Victoria Williamson (GBR) 35.687, 2; Daria Shmeleva (RUS) 35.949, 3. Also: Stephanie McKenzie (NZL) 36.333, 4; Paige Paterson (NZL) 37.926, 11.
Women's 2000m individual pursuit, gold medal: Mieke Kroger (GER) 2:27.113, 1; Georgia Williams 2:28.714, 2. Bronze medal: Aleksandra Chekina (RUS) 2:27.125, 3; Beatrice Bartelloni 2:31.299, 4.
Qualifying: Kroger 2:27.117, 1; Williams 2:27.456, 2; Chekina 2:39.168, 3; Bartelloni 2:30.558, 4. Also: Georgina Wilson (NZL) 2:31.226, 8.
Men's 33km Madison: Australia 10 points, 1; New Zealand (Alex Frame, Fraser Gough) 9, 2; Spain 7, 3.

UCI JUNIOR WORLD TRACK CYCLING CHAMPS – DAY 3 WRAP
Kennett seemed down and out after he got squeezed in an aggressive elimination race to end the first day of the six-discipline Omnium in a distance ninth place at the Moscow Velodrome. However he lifted splendidly today to finish third in a fighting display.
It sparked another excellent day for the BikeNZ team with three medals, highlighted by a silver medal to Auckland sprinter Stephanie McKenzie in the women’s sprint.
Wanganui’s Cassie Cameron, fourth in the team pursuit yesterday, produced an intelligent display to finish third in the 10km scratch race final.
It brought New Zealand’s tally to six medals in three days with two days remaining.
McKenzie earned her second medal of the championships after winning the bronze with Paige Patterson in the team sprint.
She had done her homework to dominate home country rider Tamara Balabolina in the semifinal in two straight rides to move into the final. McKenzie came up against the top ranked Russian Anastasiya Voynova in the gold medal ride but buoyed with strong local support, the local rider had the edge to win in two straight rides.
It’s Mckenzie’s third medal after pairing with Henrietta Mitchell to win silver in the team sprint in Italy last year.
“I definitely felt more confident this year after riding last year,” McKenzie said. “I was the last rider off in the qualifying which was good for your confidence too.”
The big track, at 333m and massive banking, was built to suit the Russian sprinters for the Moscow Olympics and remains one of the fastest in the world but presents some challenges for riders who usually race on a 250m track.
“It is huge for sure and the banking is quite steep. It was a bit weird because it is just two laps for sprints not three like usual. But the key for me was to watch the others in the races beforehand and see how they rode.”
Kennett, who won the flying lap and was eighth in the points yesterday, had seemingly dropped out of medal contention when he was 19th in an extremely aggressive elimination race.
But the teenager said he was buoyed by the support he received.
“I had to give it everything today. I was pretty disappointed for sure but everyone was so supportive from the rest of the team and coaches to the parents that are here. There was not one negative comment made. It was all mental for me today.”
Kennett was second in the individual pursuit to move up to fifth overall, and then produced a stunning effort to win the scratch race to move to third overall.
He saved his best until last to win the 1000m time trial in a superb 1:04.01 to claim the bronze. His time was only 25/100ths of a second slower than the gold medal effort in the individual kilo contest.
“I knew I was the fastest after I won the flying lap and was second in the pursuit. I told my parents on the phone last night I would do it.”
As a first year junior, Kennett is fired up about next year when the world championships will be staged at Invercargill.
“I know if I can improve my bunch riding then I can do really well. With the worlds in Invercargill will be massive for us and I am sure I will get lots of support there.”
Cameron was another who wanted to bounce back after she was edged into fourth place as part of the team pursuit yesterday.
She rode a well controlled race on the big Moscow track, covering breaks and moving into good position to grab the third place in the 10km scratch race final, won by Russian Kseniya Dobrynina.
The Wanganui rider said she had to adjust to the big track.
“Not only is it big, the banking is high and there’s lots more room to move around and therefore you are less likely to be boxed in here,” Cameron said.
“I don’t know why but the bunch spent most of the time riding above the blue line so we were made to do more work. I tried to position myself as low as possible to save energy and keep in touch. I moved up with six laps to go and managed to get into a good position or the final sprint.
“That was really pleasing. There’s no way I wanted to come away without a medal after the team pursuit.”
Alexandra’s Sophie Williamson is in ninth place after the first day of the women’s omnium. She was eighth in the flying lap, 10th in the points race and a solid fourth in the elimination race with Australia’s Taylah Jennings well clear after three wins from the three events today.
Results, day 3 New Zealand placings:
Women sprint, gold medal ride: Stephanie McKenzie (NZL) lost to Anastasiya Voynova (RUS) 2-0. Semifinal: Mckenzie beat Tamara Balabolina (RUS) 2-0. Voynova bt Victoria Williamson (GBR) 2-0. Bronze ride: Williamson bt Balabolina 2-0.
Men Omnium, day 2, 3000m individual pursuit: Roman Ivlev (RUS) 3:21:905, 1; Dylan Kennett (NZL) 3:24:434, 2; Caleb Ewan (AUS) 3:24:851, 3.
Scratch race: Kennett 1, Thomas Boudat (FRA) 2, Takuya Takushi (JPN) 3.
1000m time trial: Kennett 1:04.101, 1; Ivlev 1:04.419, 2; Ondrej Rybin (CZE) 1:04.702, 3.
Overall points: Caleb Ewan (AUS) 24 points, 1; Ivlev 29, 2; Kennett 32, 3.
Women Omnium, day 1:
Flying lap: Taylah Jennings (AUS) 12.15, 1; Alina Bondarenko (RUS) 2, Sujeong Jeong (KOR) 3. Also: Sophie Williamson (NZL) 13.081, 8.

Points after day 1: Jennings 3, 1; Boncarenko 7, 2; Ingrid Drexler (MEX) 16, 3. Also: Williamson 22, 9.

UCI World Junior Track Cycling Championships – Day 2 Wrap
Williamson showed plenty of nous to finish third in the 20km points race on the big Moscow track, picking up points in five of the 10 sprints.
Italy’s Maria Giulia Confalonieri proved the class of the race, eventually lapping the field to claim the victory with the New Zealand rider positioning herself cleverly to ensure she picked up points on a regular basis.
Williamson returns to the track tomorrow to compete in the omnium.
Auckland sprinter Stephanie McKenzie relished the purpose-built sprinter’s track in Moscow to move into tomorrow’s semifinals in the women’s sprints.
She topped qualifiers in the individual sprint in 11.104, with fellow Auckland teammate Paige Patterson qualifying in 12th place in 11.627 from the 27 starters.
Patterson, who won a bronze medal with McKenzie in the team sprint yesterday, was eliminated by American Jennifer in the round of 16.
McKenzie had a first round bye before eliminating Valente in the round of eight before disposing of Italy’s Stella Tomassini in two straight rides in the quarterfinal. She moves into tomorrow’s semifinals along with two powerful Russians, Tamara Balabolina and Anastasiya Voynove and Great Britain’s Victoria Williamson.
The women’s team pursuit were edged out of a medal in their bronze ride against Italy.
The kiwi combination of Cassie Cameron (Wanganui), Georgia Williams (Auckland), Georgina Wilson (Auckland) qualified third fastest in 3:34.037, fractionally ahead of the Italians despite a sluggish opening kilometre of 1:14.393.
The New Zealand trio lifted their game in the bronze medal ride but could not match the Italians who found another gear to edge out the kiwis by half a second in 3:31.54.
Meanwhile Australia showed their class to beat the home Russian team in the final with a superb 3:27.654.
Waimate’s Dylan Kennett had his medal hopes dented when he was squeezed out early in a roughly-run elimination race to bring the opening day of the omnium to a conclusion.
Kennett had won the Flying Lap, recorded 10.776s over the final 200m on the massive 333m Moscow Velodrome. He finished eighth in the points race on nine points to be in second place overall going into the elimination race.
It proved a crash fest after some aggressive riding with Kennett squeezed by two riders to be eliminated early and significantly dent his strong medal chances. He returns to complete the omnium competition with the individual pursuit, scratch race and time trial tomorrow.
Earlier Christchurch rider Alex Frame finished 11th from 34 starters in the 1000m time trial in 1:05.560 won by Australia’s Jaron Gardiner in 1:03.872.
Results, day 2:
Women 20km points race: Maria Giulia Confalonieri (ITA) 43 points, 1; Ingrid Drexel (MEX) 23 points, 2; Sophie Williamson (NZL) 15 points, 3.
Men 1000m time trial: Jaron Gardiner (AUS) 1:03:872, 1; Ben Edelin (FRA) 1:04:374, 2; Matt Baranoski (USA) 1:04:660, 3. Also: Alex Frame (NZL), 1:05.560, 11.
Women Sprint, qualifying: Stephanie McKenzie (NZL) 11.627, 1; Paige Patterson (NZL) 11.627, 12.
First round: Patterson lost to Jennifer Valente (USA) two straight.
Quarterfinal: McKenzie bt Stella Tomassini (ITA) 2-0.
Women’s 3000m team pursuit:
Gold medal ride: Australia 3:27:654 bt Russia 3:29:032.
Bronze medal ride: Italy 3:31:547 bt New Zealand (Cassie Cameron, Georgia Williams, Georgina Wilson) 3:32:122.
Qualifying: Russia 3:30.635, 1; Australia 3:30.948, 2; New Zealand 3:34.037, 3; Italy 3:34.380.
Men Omnium, Flying Lap: Dylan Kennett (NZL) 10.776, 1; Pascal Ackerman (GER) 10.834, 2; Hongki Kim (KOZR) 10.968, 3.
Points: Roman Ivlev (RUS) 1, Caleb Ewan (AUA) 2. Kennett 8.

UCI Junior World Track Cycling – New Zealand Day 1 Wrap
The New Zealand team has secured two medals in a brilliant start to their campaign at the UCI Junior World Track Championships in Moscow this morning (NZ time).
The Auckland pairing of Stephanie McKenzie and Paige Paterson secured their medal in the ride-off for bronze in the team sprint.
It was the second medal for McKenzie who won silver in last year’s world championships in Italy when paired with fellow Aucklander Henrietta Mitchell.
The junior men’s team pursuit combination followed suit with an outstanding bronze medal ride.
Riding third to last off, the quartet of Creighton Scott (Hamilton), Alex Frame (Christchurch), Fraser Gough (Havelock North) and Dylan Kennett (Waimate) recorded 4:09 in their qualifying ride, to be pipped by half a second by the hosts Russia who went into the gold medal ride against top qualifiers Australia.
Russia faded to a 4:07 effort in the gold medal ride as Australia rode their way to a new world record of 4:02.
However the kiwis turned up the wick with a superb 4:05 effort to claim the bronze. It showed the benefit of their hard work in establishing a combination under coach Ross Machejefski in their training camp at the UCI Headquarters in Switzerland prior to the championships.
It is the third bronze medal that the men’s team pursuit has won going back to 1993 and 2008, while they were edged to fourth in 2009 and 2010. New Zealand’s sole success came in 2005 with the won the gold medal in the combination that included current Radioshack pro tour riders Jesse Sergent and Sam Bewley.
There’s also a family connection with Wes Gough in that 2005 winning combination and his cousin Fraser in today’s bronze winning quartet.
Te Awamutu’s Hayden McCormick also impressed with a strong ride to narrowly finish out of the medals in the sprint finish for the junior men’s scratch race.

SportHB:Rider Profile
Paul 'Ironbolo' Tiati grew up in Camberely, Hastings. He developed Type 2 diabetes and also suffered a prolapsed disc three years ago. Instead of becoming "chained to a wheelchair", Paul decided to explore options for getting fit again... and so he started cycling. His two brothers often ride with him as 'support crew', and Paul now often competes in local duathalons and triathalons (where he got the nickname 'Ironbolo'). Paul borrows a bike from SportHB and is currently raising money to own his own hand-cycle.
SportHB supports cyclists with disabilities when possible and has managed to secure two handcycles along with another recumbent bike which are now available for all Hawke's Bay people to use. These bikes are suitable for both smaller and larger framed cyclists.
Paul wants to inspire and encourage other people, who like him may have developed health issues which may mean a life in a wheelchair. He says they must understand that their life is not over and that they can do anything if they set their mind to it – because every day our lives are a work in progress.
If you wish to find out more about the bicycles available for loan from SportHB, please contact Mike Goodacre 8459336.

Swiss preparation for BikeNZ junior track hopefuls
The 11-strong squad has completed their final preparations at the UCI Headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland. The squad comprising five male endurance riders and six female cyclists – four endurance and two sprint – enjoyed a 12-day final staging camp at the UCI before heading to Moscow.
“It has been a matter of fine tuning while we’ve been here,” said coach Ross Machejefski.
“They’ve been on the WCC track nearly every day, with a few road rides included as well. It’s been an excellent training experience and they’ve been getting better and better every day. We’re feeling pretty good but of course you can’t control what other countries are doing.”
The juniors follow on from other BikeNZ teams – the Under 23 endurance track squad and the BMX team – to training in Aigle while coach Machejefski completed the Coach Development Programme course there earlier this year.
Three of the team competed in last year’s Juniors Worlds in Montichiari, Italy led by Stephanie McKenzie, the Southland-based Aucklander who won a silver medal in the team sprint with Henrietta Mitchell. The others back for their second world championships are Christchurch’s
Alex Frame and Havelock North’s Fraser Gough.
The rest of the squad are making their debuts at this level and no doubt keen to impress as they look forward to New Zealand hosting the next UCI Junior World Championships in Invercargill next year.
The BikeNZ squad is: Scott Creighton (Hamilton), Alex Frame (Christchurch), Fraser Gough (Havelock North), Dylan Kennett (Waimate), Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu), Cassie Cameron (Wanganui), Stephanie McKenzie (Auckland), Paige Paterson (Auckland), Georgia Williams (Auckland), Sophie Williamson (Alexandra), Georgina Wilson (Auckland),
Coaches: Ross Machejefski, Lynn Murphy, John Rastrick. Mechanic: Chris O’Connor. Physiotherapist: Antony Croucher. Manager: Stephen O’Connell.

Technical Olympic cycling course will prove challenge
The New Zealand team, led by Julian Dean, were caught behind a major crash 3km from the final with only Ashburton’s Jason Christie evading the carnage to finish in the top 15 bunch sprint won by Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish.
The field completed the 140km women’s course yesterday with just two laps of the Box Hill loop but it was sufficient to give a good indication that it will provide a strong test next year. The men’s race will comprise nine circuits around the Surrey Hills course after the initial route out of the city from The Mall, passing Buckingham Palace and the central London landmarks.
“It’s a pretty neat course. Technically it will be full-on and that will demand full concentration throughout,” Reid said.
“The course can get tight at times and quite often the field were down to single file with the very narrow corners. Placement in the bunch will be critical and I think it is that technical aspect of the course that will make it very tough.
“I think that it is very possible for the elastic to break and a group could get away.”
Reid said the course will be extremely challenging if it is wet.
“Overall we got out of it what we wanted. We didn’t need the crash because we were travelling well with the group well position to set-up Julian for the sprint finish.”
Cavendish produced his trademark sprint along The Mall in London to win from Sacha Modolo (ITA) and Samuel Dumoulin (FRA). The crash also counted out the chances of American sprinter Tyler Farrar and the Australian team with only Stuart O’Grady and Matt Goss getting through.
Meanwhile 22 year old Timaru rider Shane Archbold has won the final stage of the La Mi-Aout en Bretagne in France today.
Archbold, competing with the BikeNZ endurance track team, took out the fourth and final stage over 179km to Guerlesquin in Brittany.
Timaru’s Marc Ryan was the best of the New Zealanders in 12th place on general classification going into the final stage.
The team were unavailable for comment as they headed back immediately after the race to their base in Belgium.
Also in Europe, BikeNZ Olympic hopefuls Jesse Sergent and Sam Bewley completed solid performances in the Tour of Eneco in The Netherlands.
Sky’s Edvald Boasson Hagen negotiated disastrously wet conditions on the final day to claim the overall title with Sergent seventh in the points classification and Bewley 11th in the young rider competition while both helped Radioshack to the team honours.

BikeNZ Accredited Coaching Courses
Level one MTB coaching course: Rotorua 22-23 September 2012
Level one Road cycling coaching course: Auckland 19-20 May 2012
The courses consider specific cycling disciplines and cover: effective coaching, cycling techniques and analysis, planning training, personal review and personal improvcement
The skills of how to coach are radically different to those of how to be a good rider and the Level 1 course is intended for everyone. It is very effective for former riders, who are now coaching or want to get into coaching, or parents who want to help their school teams, or current coaches who want to become BikeNZ Accredited.
