Day 3 - Te Awamutu Youth Tour

The final day of the tour got off to a flier with James Lochhead attacking the u17 peleton to take the first hill prime.

The pace was on however and James paid for his effort dearly missing out on the next hill. None of the boys were able to wrestle from Scott Ambrose the advantage he gained in the prologue. Regan Gough finished 8th on GC and the other stars from the Rotorua CRI tour all missed out on the top 3 in GC. Damien Lysaght finished the stage well and was next best from the bay with a very credible 13th. Tobias Robertshawe 20th and Luke Mudgway 33 both finished with the bunch in the final stage, Ben Ross and William Green had mechanicals. Wills DNF'd after not being able to get a compatible 9 speed rear wheel and this ruled him out of the sprint competition. Ben Peterson finished the difficult stage made harder by a 4 km strip sealed during the week with chip that was as coarse as any we have seen in NZ.

Kerri-anne Torclker won the open womens after dropping her chain before the hill on the first lap and fighting back to the peleton. Su Daniels rode well hanging on for two laps and just missing out on the last after chasing back on several times. Hannah Van Kampen shows as a DNS after losing her tag in the crash the day before. The $50.00 dollar fee for the tag replacement is under dispute and the organizers elected not to give her a time until replaced and this in no way reflects the efforts that Hannah had put in. We will all be wishing her better luck at nationals. Megan Watson continued to improve as the event went on and should be able to hold her own in Whanganui next month.

Fraser Gough continued to show his class but was unable to pull back the TT deficit from James Oram and had to settle for 2nd 9 seconds down on GC in the u19's. Logan Bean 20th 1:20 down on GC was impressive and gets stronger with every race. Sam Clarke had a Mechanical on the last stage to finish down on GC after looking promising last week.

Phoebe Treseder amazed us all with her hill climbing strategy, looking down and out on the last climb of the day but came to life like a startled rabbit after some "subtle" encouragement from coach Ivar and pulled back 75 meters on the hill to return to the bunch and finished 5th on the stage and 4th in the points competiton. Devon Hiley from Auckland showed her class and rode away from the bunch to backup her win in the event last year. Maxyna Cottam took 2nd GC. Holly Atkins finished 13th.

Amanda Jamieson CHB finished 4th in the U15 girls after unfortunately missing out on a split in the 2nd stage where the 3 girls who made the podium escaped with a break in the combined boys race and put on an unassailable lead in the GC.

Corbin Mason Smith one of the few riders to back up from the previous week was one of the better performers and shows he will be a medal prospect at nationals. He finished 2nd on GC, 3rd on the final stage, 3rd KOM and 2nd in the sprint.

Ivar Hopman and his team of helpers, Camp Mother Ashleigh, Onion Peeler Grant Garrity, Laundress Caroline Atkins, Time Keeper Penny Gough and the weekend casual crew all contributed to another great camp and all will be looking to a rest this week, especially Ivar who will qualify for the PGR team this weekend.

Green in Verde at TA

Up and down day today at Te Awamutu Junior Tour
Highlights of the Day
Phoebe Treseder was the highlight of the day winning u17 Girls stage 2 in an epic bunch sprint wearing the green jersey into stage 3. Phoebe is 9th on GC 1:06 from leader. Holly Atkins at 13th is having a good tour Maxyna Cottam remains in second place.
William Green Takes first sprint in u17 'boys to wear the green into race 3 after all of the boys contributed in a planned attack on the Mailljout Verde.

Kerri-Anne Torckler Retains Yellow in Open Women 9 secs ahead of Rachel Larner
Corbin Mason Smith in second by 2 seconds in u15 boys.
Fraser Gough second in u19 boys by 12 seconds to James Oram with 1 stage tomorrow
Logan Bean finished in the U19 bunch after trying to attack with a km to go.
Luke Mudgway finished strongest from the bay in the 3rd stage of the u17 boys, Regan Gough 9th at 40 secs and Damien Lysaght 14th at 45 secs both have a real chance in the final race tomorrow.
in the closely.

Not so flash.
Hannah Van Kampen touched wheels and had minor crash but unable to catch bunch and relinquished her 3rd placing. With nothing to lose she should be able to have a good crack at tomorrows 3rd and final stage.

It looks as though the weather should hold for tomorrow and racing looks like it's is going to be demanding with several km's of the circuit freshly sealed in large chip.

Lidia Rippon from North Harbour will be looking to move up the field on the back of last weekends 3rd place at the Rotorua CRI Tour.

Minimum Age Requirement to Ride

We have had inquiries from members asking what the minimum age limit is to ride and race with the RCC. Children up to 13 years old are required to be accompanied by a parent or guardian until such time as the race starter / Club Captain is satisfied that the junior is proficient to race by themselves. This decision may be at different ages for different riders, but each junior’s competence and experience will be assessed. Parents are expected to accompany children below 13 years of age both to/from the race as well as during the race.

Update from Jeremy Yates

It’s been 2 months since I left NZ to join Manisaspor Continental Team, born of the Turkish football club from the same region. To be honest I wasn’t expecting much after a bad experience with a new ‘Belgie’ team last year; I thought it would be much the same. So far I have been blown away- it hasn’t been a smooth or easy beginning but the team have always been honest with plans, developments and delays.
We don’t have all the bling wheels or TT gear - it is a Spartan operation but there is a solid frame work that ultimately hinges on commitment and a great race program.

I have put in a lot of hard work, basically not taking a break since August last year. I think a higher work load suits me better now that I am older, I still get knocked around by the odd bug but that’s normal when your body is copping a hiding from racing and travelling.
The new team are fantastic. We are 7-8 guys living, training, eating and racing together non-stop. It has its hard parts being away from the comforts of home but this year we have been given fantastic racing opportunities: training and racing in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Mallorca and Greece - all towards our major target the 47th Presidential Tour of Turkey, starting Sunday.
Our main GC chance rests with Tadej Valjavec (7th in Giro d'Italia last year). He placed 2nd GC in the 4 day Tour of Mallorca and is a lethal climbing weapon. Gabor Kasza is pretty funny guy, every racing story starts with the phrase "one day in the tour of (obscure country here) I was in break away..." his speciality. Our sprinter is Dean - I haven’t actually seen sprint yet as he is normally up the road hunting points or tearing legs off in the break. The rest of us (Andi, Mareck, Ahmet, Fatih and Bunyo) are all good climbers and can ride in support of the team or, if given the chance, can make something for ourselves.
We have just completed the Tour of Greece - I was unlucky to be caught in the last 10m of the final stage around Athens. But I was very happy with how things went, both for myself and the rest of the team. In every break of every stage we were represented. We came very close to winning 4 of the 6 stages, some from daring breakaways of up to 140km. Only to be caught in the last 1.5km, 300m, 200m and 10m respectively. I finished 3rd on the last stage and 10th overall, Dean won sprint classification and we held the KOM lead for 2 days with Kasza. Our team won teams GC overall and I feel now that we are in fighting form to challenge for an even bigger result.
Best regards to all, Jeremy Yates

Ramblers Muscle Up in Rotorua

Ramblers once again strong and impressive in the new kit at the CRI Junior selection Tour in Rotorua.
The weekend got off to a good racing start in very wet conditions with Ben Ross winning the first stage in the U17 boys after attacking with 15 km to go He won by about 1.5 minutes but was docked 1 minute in GC for a sign-in transgression.
Fraser Gough had a huge race in the u19's escaping early with Dion Smith. Fraser put 3:47 on the field and 12 seconds on Dion to a take a strong grip on the tour. James Oram won the 10km hilly TT later in the day averaging 49.6 kmh with Fraser 2nd 6 secs back. The Pure Black Boys put on a good show in Sundays Criterium but were unable to put any real time on team mate Fraser. Fraser was again prominent in Sundays final stage to take the tour by over 3 minutes. Sam Clark and Logan Bean both show that they can compete at this level with Sam 13th on GC and Logan 32nd out of 54 starters.
Hannah Van Kampen rode well all weekend in the open woman's race finishing in the top 10. Megan Watson trying hard to find some form after her French sojourn was 17th but will be better for the k's next week at the Te Awamutu tour.
Regan Gough fought hard all weekend to finish 4th on GC with the u17 boys taken by Placemakers teammate Mark Findlay. Ben Ross (16), Tobias Robertshawe (18th) Mike Garrity (20th) William Green (21st), James Lochhead (26th) all continue to improve and got stronger as the weekend progressed all finishing with the bunch in the last race. Damien Lysart was forced to withdraw with a mechanical in the last stage after being one of the better performers in the TT. First years Ben Peterson and Luke Mudgeway will benefit from the experience, watch out for these guys next year.
Phoebe Treseder and Holly Atkins were both competitive in the U17 girls with Phoebe 9th and Holly 14th in the 30 strong field.
CHB Cycling's Corbin Mason Smith continued his form from the CHB Junior Tour winning the last race but unable to overcome Sam Dobbs 8 second lead to take Silver on GC.
Amanda Jamieson also from CHB had a good weekend taking the Bronze in the u15 girls and will be another to watch at Te Awamtut next weekend.
Busy camp mother Ashleigh Neave was awarded the 2010 U19 woman's national point series jersey at the event unfortunately is sidelined recovering after a knee injury sustained while running during an Outwardbound sabbatical.
It was good to see Peter and Elaine Gavin strong supporters of the Juniors and Ramblers at the event and wish them well for their future in Tauranga.
Ivar Hopman aka coach will have a busy week getting the Juniors ready for next weekends Te Awamutu tour considered the premier event for Juniors and well worth a look if you are in the vicinity.

Thankyou from Visitors Steve and Liz

Steve dropped us a line after riding with us over the Club Champs weekend
“I just wanted to drop a quick email for allowing my girlfriend and I to race as visitors at the road race yesterday. It was really well organised, and great fun. I managed to drop my sunglasses (thanks to a bee) on the first lap and the lady following the senior mens race kindly picked them up and gave me them back at the top of the hill. Liz also got her chain jammed on her last lap and a man appeared in a car and kindly fixed it for her. If you do know who this was I'd be very grateful if you could pass on our thanks.”

Such items could include Ramblers' successes at competition or upcoming events Ramblers may interested in.

UCI Track World Championship

Women’s Teams Pursuit: Alison Shanks, Jaime Nielsen, Kaytee Boyd - BRONZE medal
This trio narrowly missed out on a spot in the gold medal final by just 7/10ths of a second. They controlled the pace in the bronze medal ride off and their time of 3:24.086 was the second fastest time of the competition, more than a second quicker than silver medalists USA.
Shane Archibald – SILVER omnium
After winning two World Cup rounds, this was Shane’s first senior track world championship. Over the course of the competition Shane fluctuated from fourth to 10th, up to first and then down to fourth going into the final discipline, the Kilo Time Trial. Shane rode fastest to elevate him to second overall, just four points from the gold medal.
Ali Shanks – SILVER individual pursuit
Commonwealth Games gold medalist and former World Champion, Ali worked hard to regain the rainbow jersey. She came within a blink of it, leading Sarah Hammer for all but the final lap before the American unleashed a blinding finish to steal the jersey by 29/100th of a second. Ali rode 3:33.299
Jesse Sergent – SILVER individual pursuit
It was a tough final for Jesse, facing the new World Record holder and top qualifier Jack Bobridge, a day after racing the team pursuit. Bobridge was able to open up a gap of two seconds within the first kilometre. Sergent, who had had minimal build up on the track prior to the championships finished two and a half seconds back in a time of 4:23.865
The team included not only 16 cyclists, but also a Team Manager, Assistant Team Manager, Lead Coach, Women’s Coach, Sprint Coach, 3 Sports Scientist, 2 Physios,, 2 Mechanics, Performance Analyst, Sports Psychologist and a  Soigneur.
