Expressions of Interest Masters Riders

BikeNZ have been invited to send two teams to the "16th Friendship Tour 2008" (Tour de L'amitie") in Tahiti from Friday, July 31st to Saturday, August 08th, 2009 included. One team will be 4 U23 or Development athletes and the other 4 masters athletes. Masters in Tahiti are over 40 years old.
"The terms of our invitation are :
-Travel costs of riders from AKL/PPT/AKL to athletes' account
-Internal travels, accommodation and meals from riders' arrival (2 or 3 days before the beginning of the tour) to rider's departure (2 or 3 days after the end of the Tour) would be on our account."
This will be a self-funded project with all costs of travel to and from Tahiti and team uniform for the riders and manager being to the selected riders costs. You will also need an international licence and appropriate insurance.

Update from Westley Gough in Belgium

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well in your part of the world. I thought it would be a good time to send out a report on what I've been up to in Europe so far this season since I've been here for nearly a month, just to keep everyone up to date and to give an insight into whats happening with the NZ team thats based in here Belgium.

My first goal for the season was the NZ Track Championships, it was a fairly successful week for me as i managed 2nd in the Individual Pursuit and also we rode the first ever sub 4min team pursuit done in New Zealand. After the New Zealand Championships, i left New Zealand on the 17th of March and headed to Warsaw in Poland to ride the team pursuit for New Zealand at the World Championships. We had an interesting final prep for Worlds this year as we only landed in Warsaw 7 days before competition started, the main focus for the first few days was to get over the jet lag and get familiar at the new track. The Championships got off to a great start with Ali shanks winning the World Title in the Individual Pursuit. Day three was race day for us and in the qualifying we rode a solid time of 4.01. We were hoping for slightly faster than this and the 4.01 was only good enough for 4th fastest. That night we raced the Brits for the bronze medal and won, going slightly quicker than the morning ride. We were a little dissapointed not to make the final, but it was still good to win the bronze. Actually it was the first time NZ has ever won a medal in the team pursuit at a World Championships.

I took a week off the bike after the Track World Championships, and during that time managed a small road trip around Europe. Along with a team mate, i checked out the cities of Berlin, Prague, Lindau and Lausanne, a good way to relax before i got back into the training.


Here in Belgium this is officially the Belgium Testing/Training/Race phase. Its a young team of 7 track riders and we are using this phase to do some testing and lots of racing and training. Personally i'm using this phase as training for my main goal later in the season, the U23 time trial at the World Championships in Switzerland on the 23rd of September. This is a nice change of focus for me and i'm looking forward to the challenge. I'm into my 5th week of training here and I've raced 7 times so far. The races have been Belgium "Kermesses" they are around 120km long and its very hard, fast and rough racing. They can have between 100 to sometimes over 250 riders and are ofter raced on very short tight circuits. They test your bike handling skills as the are raced at an average speed of around 45km/h. I'm getting my road legs back and starting to feel better and better and i'm aiming to get some results in these types of race's before i leave on the 1st of July.

Two weeks ago we spent a day in the Lab at the Leuven university doing Lactate and performance tests, I've attached a photo of me in the lab doing to test. We use tests like this to establish training zones and to get an idea on what needs tweaking or changing in your training programme.




I had a minor setback when i had a crash in a Kermesse in Beveren last week, i was mixing it up with in the bunch sprint which i don't usually do, there was a crash in front of me and i hit the deck at around 60km/h and landed hard on my hip, still clipped into my bike. I was fine, but i think really lucky didn't do anything serious as it was one of the bigger crashes I've had. I've a attached a photo of whats happens to a helmet in a crash like this! We start a big tour in three days time, its called the Tryptique Ardennais which is a tough three day tour, so for me its going to be an easy few days to lead into it. Cycling CHB Duathlon 9th May

Robbie has asked if you can forward notification to all club members inviting them to compete in the Club Duathlon Championships to be held on the 9th May starting & finishing from Johnson's Electrical Waipukurau.

The event is open to all Cycling CHB members, and is also open to Ramblers & HBMSC members as well as the public. However, only Cycling CHB members are eligible for the club champs.

 
 

It has been advertised through the HBMSC monthly newsletter that there is a cost to register for the event. This is NOT correct, there will be no fee for Cycling CHB, Ramblers & HBMSC members. There will though be a fee of $10.00 for people who are not a member of any of these three clubs if they want to compete.

Ivar's Army of Juniors Strike Again in Rotorua

Another big day for the Ramblers Juniors at the CRI Tinelli Tour the second nationals selection event.

The morning started with road races over two circuits on quiet roads in rolling country south west of Rotorua.

Under 15 boys
A 20km road race with Wills and Regan finishing in the top five after Boris Clarke (TA) broke away and had 20 secs at 1 point finishing 15 Seconds ahead. The rest were comfortable in the bunch. (James Fulford, Regan Gough, William Green, Tobias Robershawe and Clean Shaven "Slick" James Lochhead)

Under 17 Boys

Alex McCory-Bowick brock away from the gun, got out to 30 secs with 1 other rider. He held this lead for most of the 60 km winning by five seconds with Fraser Gough 4th. Sam Clarke, Lance Welch and Tim Lutter finished in the bunch with Logan Bean chasing hard but unable to get back. Duncan MacKenzie had a tough day after last weekend pulling out after injuring his knee.

Under 19 Girls

Ella Stadler-Andrews (ex Rambler currently riding in England) showed her sprint prowess taking this race with Ashely Neave well placed 4th. The under 19 girls where racing with Open Woman making this finish more impressive The bunch was split early in the race. Sarah Watson started after having a bad night with a stomach bug but pulled out at 20km.

Under 19 Boys

Sean Joyce had a great day taking out this race after Tom Findlay, Taylor Gunman and Patrick Bevan palyed team tag with the peleton. Rory Mac Kenzie took advantage of a lull in the race to break away 3/4 of the way around on the 3rd Lap. Sean and 6 others got across to Rory and this small break finished about a minute ahead of the main bunch. Rory finished 6th.

Jeremy Stephens finished 12th in with the main bunch. Simon Pepper finished off the back after and altercation with a stone.

Ramblers make podium at TA

Another big day at Te Awamutu with some exciting results

TT of the day goes to Ashleigh Neave winning the under 19 woman's TT and getting third on GC also fast enough to take third in the senior woman's TT behind Rachel Mercer and Sonia Waddell, Ashleighs 22:38 over the 15.2 km course eclipsed pre race favorite Maddy Brunton by 9 seconds.

Sean Joyce and Rory MacKenzie had strong rides in the U19 TT but were unable to make the top 10 taken out by National Champion Micheal Vink riding the 22.6 km hilly course in 29:15. Sean finished 12th and Rory 20th in the TT field of 58 starters. Sean had a strong weekend and was 7th in GC 1:33 down after 233km. 17 riders finished within 3 minutes.

Duncan MacKenzie proved that he is a future force riding 20:57 on the 15.2km course to take 3rd in the U17 TT only 10 seconds behind winner Scott Creighton. The ride was good enough to secure 5th on GC, Fraser Gough finished 5th in the TT, 7th on GC, 3rd KOM and Sprint points helped by a solo break on Saturday. Tim Lutter 24th and Sam Clarke 25th along with other Ramblers Logan Bean and Lance Welch would have gained a lot of experience in the field of 57 finishers.

Megan Watson felt the effects of the previous races in the U17 girls finishing mid field in the TT but a creditable 12th on GC.

Regan Gough finished best of all the Ramblers/CHB securing 2nd GC in his first year U15. He rode a great TT getting third in 15:05 over the 9 km. The Te Awamutu crowd will be thankful that Regan is the last contender in this generation of cousins. James Fulford 12 secs slower than Regan finished 11 in the TT to improve his GC. A strong future for the Ramblers club with Willam Green 11th, Tobias Robertshaw 12th, James Fulford 16th and James Lochhead 18th on GC out of 34 finishers.

Recognition must go to Ivar Hopman for keeping this crew of characters in good spirits and physically ready for this event and I look forward to the results from the Rotorua Tour next weekend where many of these riders are either in camp with Ivar or selection camp. Hope the team enjoys the Fish and Chips after the weekend, they earned them.

GC Changes after a demanding day at TA

The organisers and selectors were keen to challenge the riders today with longer stages than have been raced in previous years. The course more demanding than Apley Circuit.
U19 Men 4 laps totaling 111km took its toll on many of the riders. Rory Mac Kenzie was impressive getting across a good break to Taylor Gunman and Tom Findlay, the field chased them down and all three paid for their effort after they could not stay with the lead bunch on the last lap. Sean Joyce rode a smart race and finished sixth keeping his GC hopes alive for the TT tomorrow. Jeremy Stevens had a mechanical and could not chase back on.

Ashleigh Neave rode a strong race but failed also to hold on to the lead bunch on the final lap (3).
Two other U19's managed to stay with the small front group of open contenders. Rachel Mercer managed to get away with a team mate and increased her already substantial lead. Ashleigh will hold third in the U19 GC but has made it difficult to improve her place in the TT tomorrow due to the time lost.

The U17 boys rode three laps and the 70 strong field was blown to pieces. Fraser Gough was 5th and Duncan MacKenzie finished with the lead bunch, Duncan and Fraser are both in the top ten on GC and the TT tomorrow promises to be an exciting finale to this strong contest. Tim Lutter finished in the 2nd bunch with Sam Clark close behind. Logan and Lance were futher back.

U17 girl Megan Watson got away with 7 others on the first lap but a small gap on the hill sprint meant a hard chase up the next couple of hills. Unable to bridge she was caught by four others.
They were unable to reel in the strong bunch and along with the yellow jersey holder watched GC get away by valuable minutes. Megs finished 10th and continues to impress with her tenacity.

U15 Regan Gough continued his form from the recent CHB tour and finished fifth. The 1 lap of the circuit took its toll and the boys pace put them in sight of the U17 girls. Tobias Robertshawe came in eight with William Green, James Lochhead and James Fulford all futher back and slipping on GC.

The event finishes tomorrow with the TT surely a race of truth with the miles already on the legs over the last two days

Big Ramblers Team have good day at TeA (Te Awamutu Tour)

U19-Male-Sean Joyce competed well in the days 104km stage placing 6th
Jeremy Stevens and Rory MacKenzie also finished in the front bunch .
Female- Ashleigh Neave first year U19 finished in the open women/u19 bunch in the 88km stage won by Rachel Mercer after a strong 20km plus solo break .
Sarah Watson finished down in a strong field with the likes of Emma Crum and Sonia Waddell .

U17-Male- Duncan MacKenzie had a successful morning stage finishing 4th.
Fraser Gough and Sam Clarke finished in the front bunch with Tim Lutter, Logan Bean and Lance Welsh closely following in the 2nd bunch.
In the afternoon stage 2 North Habour riders got away 10km out and put about 15 seconds on the field. Fraser looked strong getting out to 25 secs in a solo burst in the first lap Duncan MacKenzie and Tim Lutter had good rides to finish in the main bunch. First year riders Logan Bean and Lance Welsh paid dearly for a small gap on the hill sprint quickly getting extended when out of the leading group.

U17 -Females
Megan Watson the only Rambler rider in this class field finished bunch time after the 23km morning stage and about 7th in the afternoons 55km stage when the bunch was blown to bits with about 20 out of 35 in the finish.

U15 - Mens
Ramblers had a good first 23km race with Regan Gough, William Green, James Fulford, James Lochhead, Tobias Robertshawe finishing in the front bunch.
In the afternoon a crash near the finish put Tobias on the ground but he got up to finish. Other Ramblers missed out on the sprint but should get bunch time.

The Weather alternated all day from hot to cool and windy with the odd spell of drizzle. Tomorrow has some long stages and the rolling hills will surely sap some legs so watch this space for further news.

2009 POWERCO CYCLE TOUR OF TARANAKI

2009 POWERCO CYCLE TOUR OF TARANAKI
The Powerco Cycle Tour of Taranaki is a stage race held over Queens Birthday weekend,

30th May to 1st June 2009. Entry is open to all BikeNZ 2009 National and WCNI Centre licence holders. Racing consists of one individual time trial and four graded mass start road races, with four open grades and a novice category.
A maximum of 50 riders will be accepted into each grade on a first come, first served basis. Riders will be assigned to grades by the Cycling New Plymouth handicapper. Prize money will be paid for stage placings and general classification within each grade. Each grade will have a tour leader jersey, a sprint-points jersey, and a climbers points jersey. There will also be a leading womens jersey in some grades. U19 riders will contest A to D grades.
