Great Weekend at Junior Tour CHB

It is fast becoming an adage that it's pretty hard to beat a Gough when you are in Waipukurau.

In great conditions in a very competitive event with some exciting finishes Fraser shone winning several stages and taking GC in the U17 event and Regan Gough also showed good form taking 2nd in the GC for the U15 boys. Ashleigh Neave in her first year U19 2nd on GC behind Maddy Brunton rattled a few cages and will be one to watch as the year progresses.

The fields were good with a lot of the top age group riders present, the hospitality and organisation was great and the CHB club along with Ramblers can pat themselves on the back for a well run first up event which promises a strong future.

Good fields for CHB Junior tour this weekend

Click Here for the most recent Start List for the CHB Junior tour starting Saturday.
Click Here for race times and venues. This will be a good weekend to see some of local juniors test themselves against some of the countries best. CHB Cycling in conjunction with Ramblers have done a great job to get this tour organised and timed to help riders peak for the Te Awamutu and Rotorua junior tours. Look for this tour to become another major on the junior calender

Regional Sports Park

Fast track, record entries!

The East Coast North Island Athletic champs, which took place at the Regional Sports Park near Hastings last night, attracted record entries of over 500 athletes.
“I have been involved in this event for 23 years and last night was the most entries I can recall,” said Chair of Hastings Athletics, Allan Potts. “We had close to a thousand people including spectators, and cars were banked up for several hundred metres outside the main entry,” he said.
Meanwhile a Land Protection Society is attempting to have the $2 million track ripped up and placed elsewhere.
“Events like last night, and we have many of them during the season, demonstrate just how successful and popular the new track is. They also demonstrate the stupidity of attempts to have it bulldozed,” he says.

For more information contact Allan Potts 0273 701152

Online Cycling Communities

There are several online cycling communities worth checking out if you haven't already!

Firstly you may have heard of RideStrong, www.ridestrong.co.nz. Its a new cycling organisation dedicated to promoting safe and enjoyable environments for all cyclists - free to join or not, you choose your level and they have some great prizes up for grabs.

Secondly check out this link : www.vorb.org.nz/mon-the-bay-t93764.html
Vorb is another cycling website, traditionally for MTBers but seems to be getting more and more following by Roadies and Trampers. A local roadie rider is trying to start a Hawkes Bay section - the thread is worth checking out! While there have a look, some interesting bikes!

From RaboPlus NZ Track Cycling Championship, Invercargill.

The East Coast North Island track cycling team is holding its own at the RaboPlus NZ Track Cycling Championship at the indoor velodrome in Invercargill. Half way through the week long event the medal tally is mounting, with Kerry Harford's gold at the Masters 2 points race closely followed by Westley Gough's silver at 4km Elite men pursuit. In the junior ranks it's Fraser Gough who leads the charge as he scored a gutsy bronze in the Under 17 Boys 3km pursuit and a accident marred silver in the 10km points race. Fellow team mate Sam Clarke ended up watching the final of this points race from a stretcher after he was taken out on the steep embankment by careless riding from some of the local lads. After spending most of the night at the hospital this tough nugget from Waipukurau is ready to take on the Team Sprints on Saturday minus some skin and a stitched up ear.

The next bit of bling will come from Havelock North's Harford as he qualified for the 3km pursuit final riding off for gold against Nelson's Ray Dunstan, who broke is own NZ record by three seconds in the heats.

This premium event has highlighted again the depth of track cycling talent hidden in Hawkes Bay, the only province with currently no local velodrome to train or compete on. More exciting track racing is expected in the later stage of the champs, which will be crowned off by the Elite Men Scratch on Saturday night, with Olympian Westley Gough among the early favorites.

Length of NZ ride - Ramblers Support

Dear Ramblers Cycling Club,

Can you please distribute a message to your club members for me. I am riding the length of NZ with a friend and it would be nice to do some riding with local club members along the way. It would also make our trip a bit easier by bunch riding.
Our intended plan is to arrive in Napier on the Wednesday 15th April coming from Masterton. We then head to Gisborne on Thursday morning as light permits.
This will be the longest part of our trip and it would be nice to have some company.
If anybody is interested in joining us for some riding, they can contact me on 0273242478 closer to the time or email back before April.

Thanks,
Mike Kilduff
