Ramblers juniors spreading themselves far and wide.

This weekend will see many of Ramblers juniors racing in National and International competitions. First of this Friday afternoon(2.23pm local time) will be Ashleigh Neave (Open Women/JU19), in a 15.5km TT at Canberra’s Kowalski Tour.

Regan Gough(JB15), Liam Johnson(JB13) and Ashleigh Neave will start with a Road Race in Canberra on Saturday morning and in the afternoon they will all race a Criterium at the Stromlo Mountain Park.

The same day a Lindisfarne team of James Lochhead, Ben Ross, William Green and Ben Pedersen, are lining up in the North Island Secondary School team time trial competition. A 16km out and back race at Gordonton just north of Hamilton. This event is growing out to be one of NZ biggest cycling events with 46 team in their Junior grade alone.

On Sunday the Trans-Tasman battle will resume as Regan Gough(JB15), Liam Johnson(JB13) will have to contest a Road Race and a TT. A 71.8km hilly Road race should be in Ashleigh Neave’s favor, as she has shown before in 2008, finishing second overall in the JU17. Follow these guys on: http://canberratour.actcyclingevents.com.au

Ngaruawhia is hosting the NISS Road Race on Sunday and will see more Ramblers Juniors on the start-line. Phoebe Treseder(Iona College) U15G,
William Green, Ben Ross and Ben Pedersen(Lindisfarne College) U15B, James Lochhead(Lindisfarne College) U16B, Logan Bean(CHB College) U17B and Megan Watson(Hastings Girls High) U20G.

This spectacle is a must see event for everyone, as many North Island schools rock up with their purpose built trailers/tents and uniforms to show case their cycling talents. The number of starters in the Road Races, JU15B x 78 and JU17 x 83, short races (nothing over 27km) and narrow roads make for exciting contests.

Coming Saturdays Italian Pursuit

This is a team event. Each team consists of 6 riders – one from each grade. The team ride together but the lowest grade rider must be on the front. The lowest grade rider pulls out at the completion of their lap.

Therefore: the F grade rider leads the first lap and must not be passed by any teammates, this rider pulls out at the completion of 1 lap and the E grade rider takes the front. This pattern continues until the A grade rider does the last lap alone and the time is taken when this rider crosses the line.

Each team has a rider from each grade (except G grade which will have a separate race)

Teams are started 30 secs apart.

Individual Time Trial (NO drafting) rules apply – that is, teams must not draft off each other or cooperate in any way.

No time trial equipment to be used.

Teams will be selected by the race committee and available on the Ramblers website on Friday.

If insufficient riders enter from any grade (or too many) teams will be rated by ability.

Marketing Survey

Yesterday the first survey was circulated by email to financial members of Ramblers Cycling Club. Financial members without email will be posted survey forms. The survey is your first opportunity to have your say in Ramblers identity (including logo, club uniform, website and even eNews!).

The National Bike Shed of NZ Sneak Preview

The National Bike Shed of New Zealand has been displaying a number of interesting and unusual bikes from their own and other private collections. This "Sneak Preview Show" is at the Hastings Community Arts Centre, and finishes this Saturday. Remember to pop along this week or you will have to wait until October for the official opening of The National Bike Shed of New Zealand in Napier.

Volunteer Awareness Week from 20 – 26 June.

Volunteers make a huge contribution to sport in Hawke’s Bay in many different ways. As coaches, referees, administrators, transporters, event assistants… they allow sport to happen! Now it’s time to say THANKS
This week is an opportunity for you to recognise and acknowledge the volunteers who ensure our Saturday racing happens. That’s mum who takes you to the race and waits patiently (for hours) for you to finish; dad who cleans your bike when you are too tired; the marshals in the kitchen who keep the hot water coming; the committee who stock the trailer with chocky biscuits as well as run the races; all those who contribute to our magazine, our eNews and our race reports; the marshals who stand on the corners just for you in the rain; your brother who helped you changed that flat tyre; your partner who understands that on Saturday nights it is always their turn to sort dinner … make sure you say thanks… and not just this week, keep saying thanks for the rest of the year.

Velodrome Update

The news is that the Government has allocated a fund that will go towards a velodrome in the North Island. The next stage for Hawkes Bay’s bid to secure a velodrome is to continue gathering public support to strengthen the case to be put to the Government/SPARC (who decide where in the North Island the velodrome will go).
Over this time we are asking Rambler's Members to become ambassadors for the track and sell the benefits to of having a track in our area, to the public. This of course would include all those local businesses that would get a financial return (for example, motels, petrol stations, fast food outlets and even real-estate agents with people shifting house to be near the track). As well as cycling, the track will also have space available in the centre for ball sports. This is going to be our one and only chance to get a covered velodrome in Hawke's Bay.

He has seen our club and this area in general produced some of New Zealand's finest riders both on the track and the road and believes the benefits of having a covered velodrome here will be immediate and far-reaching. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for Hawke's Bay and we really need everyone to PLEASE get in behind this project.

Standout Juniors

As you all know, two of our juniors have been selected to represent our country. U19 Fraser Gough was initially selected for the Tour d’ Abitibi in Canada, but has since been reselected to race in the prestigious World Track Championships in Motichiarri, Italy. In his grade, Fraser is the only North Islander going to the World Tracks.
U19 Ashleigh Neave has been selected to race at the Canberra Tour and then goes on (with coach Ivar Hopman) to Europe for the Junior World Championships where she will be the sole Kiwi racing.
A reminder that there are several initiatives to help support these juniors.

Saturday Club Race: 19 June 2010 Venue Change !!!

RACE VENUE CHANGE
Due to a function taking place at Puketapu School, Ramblers racing will be based from the Puketapu Domain (Dartmoor Road) this Saturday. Because of this, the circuit will be raced anti-clockwise and the finish will be on Dartmoor Road.
Please do not go the school or park cars there. There is ample parking at the domain.
The only facilities at the Domain are toilets.
Please bring plenty to drink with you as the water supply is not reliable (there will still be biscuits in the trailer for those who need a sugar fix).
