Kerry has some success in Tahiti (Final Report)

Kerry Harford Tahiti report 3

A strong ride in The Tour De L'Amitie stage 7, a 16.6km time trial, from Kerry Harford saw the Bike NZ rider taking top honours in the masters grade for the day. His team mate Richard Walsh's second place in the TT was enough to reclaim the blue leaders' jersey.

This left the diminished masters team to defend the leaders jersey in the eight and last stage, a 59km criterium along the seafront in down-town Papeete.

With Kerry's 45km/hr power surges at the front of the peleton, leaving not much space for counter attacks, the Bike NZ masters team managed to secure the coveted blue jersey.>

Kerry Harford Tahiti Report 2

Ramblers intrepid traveler Kerry Harford is in seventh place on the Masters GC after five of the eight stages in Tahiti's Tour De L'Amitie. The rough road surface on the tropical islands took its toll on the peletons' material and Kerry suffered punctures in two stages.

The BikeNZ Masters team had to run Stage 5-2, a 30km Team Time Trial, without Canterbury's powerhouse Lester Settle, subsequently losing the Blue masters jersey of leading team mate Richard Walsh to local Serge Taruoura.

With two more road stages, one ITT and a criterium left, the team has it's work cut out trying to reclaim the top spot. In this event the Seniors, Under 23 and Masters all race together, with the Chilean National Team stringing up a raft of victories and overall placings.

Kerry Harford at Tour De L’ Amitie 2009, Tahiti

One of our most prolific national medal winners, Kerry Harford, is currently racing in Tahiti as part of BikeNZ‘s Masters Team. The 2009 Tour de l’Amitie is a nine day tour based on Tahiti’s two main islands, Papeete and Moorea.
Last Friday the NZ Masters squad made their present felt by scoring first and second place in the 4.2km prologue in the city of Punaauia. With Lester Settle taking the leaders jersey by 1.2 seconds from his team mate Kerry Harford and finishing sixth and eight on overall GC.

On Saturday the first stage was a 110km out and back road race from Punaauia along Papeete’s west coast. A three rider break away managed to gap the peleton by 1.20 minutes, with all the masters finishing with the bunch. No big movements on top of the GC leader-board with Kerry sitting pretty 1.2seconds behind Lester Settle and 15 seconds ahead of no.3.
