Regional Park Update

Grandstand underway shortly
Construction of a 2500 seat grandstand at the Regional Sports Park is due to commence in March.

“The Grandstand and associated carparks, which have a 12 month build time, will complete stage one of the Park,” says Lawrence Yule, Chair of the Regional Sports Parks Trust. “However I know the region’s cyclists will be mainly interested in stage three which includes a central complex and indoor velodrome. We’re making final changes to the velodrome design and expect to have the master plan finalised in the next few weeks,” he says.

Stage three, including the velodrome, is expected to be completed towards the end of 2011 but is dependent on funding. Much of the funding for stage one – the athletics track and grandstand – has come from the money realised through the sale of Nelson Park. Subsequent funding is coming from central and local government, charitable organisations and the corporate sector.

“Hawke’s Bay has the potential to lead New Zealand in the development of the Park. This especially applies to the velodrome which will be the only indoor venue in the North Island. But just as important are the Park’s ‘social capital’ objectives. The venue will be used by all ages and cultures,” he says.

“But it’s important to remember that projects of this scale don’t just happen. They rely on ongoing public support. So if you haven’t already done so I urge you to join the Sports Park supporters’ club at www.sportsparksupporter@gmail.com ,” says Mr Yule.
