Weekend Racing: 26th – 27th February 2011 East Coast Graded Club Tour
This is a graded club tour with riders from CHB Cycling and Gisborne Cycling Clubs joining Ramblers for the weekend.
Remember you must complete each stage in order to begin the next.
Saturday – Stage One: 8.5km Hill Climb
Race Circuit: Seafield Road
Venue: No venue – the race starts at the Bayview end of Seafield Road and public toilet facilities are available in Bayview.
Registration: at the venue – the tour costs $10 for the weekend

Riding in a Tour: Your Club is Your Team
Club members from other East Coast NI clubs riding as visitors at our club tours has brought a different and positive flavour to these events. However, some of our club members don't seem so aware of the different dynamic this brings to our club racing.
During the last tour it was commented on that some of our club riders were riding as if they were in a normal club race, treating all riders including visiting club members the same, and taking points off fellow club members who potentially had a better chance of overall success in the tour. While we want to be hospitable to visiting club members, we also want to encourage friendly rivalry. There is little glory for our club or its members in having Ramblers place 2nd to 10th in a grade when the person who wins it is from Gisborne for example. And remember visitors will be coming here to do as well as they can.
The Ramblers club tours are a good, relatively low-key opportunity to learn and practice team tactics and experience a multi-stage event. While the ITT is an individual event, we encourage members to approach the road race in particular as a teams event – us versus them.
The upcoming tour is a good place to start becoming more aware of what’s happening around you in a race or tour:
• Where do your clubmates sit as regards points in your grade going into the road race?
• When visitors attack do you all respond, or do you delegate one or two to do this, while at the same time protecting key clubmates?
• Or worse do you leave it to your clubmates with more points to wear themselves out doing the work?
• When it comes to the sprint do you all go for it with no thought about where your leading clubmates are, or where the visitors are?
• And do you know which of your clubmates it is in the club’s best interests to get to the line in the best position.
• If you are lucky enough to get a group of your clubmates off the front in the road race do you work together to consolidate your break and then sort yourselves out at the finish?
These are just some thoughts to consider and that’s the point. We encourage those Ramblers taking part in the club tour to think about these sorts of things rather than treating the tour as a race like any other. The intention is not to make it super–serious but rather to broaden the experiences of our members and hopefully make their racing more interesting as a result.

Many of you will know Don Mudford who has been out almost every Saturday with us to stand on a corner, trusty thermos nearby, and help to ensure we finish our race safely. This weekend at the Club Tour will be his last weekend with us. What he will do on a Saturday afternoon remains a mystery, for what could be better than spending an afternoon in the heat, or getting drenched or blown away as you watch crazy lycra-clad individuals huff and puff past you.
Make sure you give him a cheery wave and thank him – his support has been amazing.

Ramblers Uniform Order
Owing to the main order for several reasons taking a bit longer than expected to be finalised, and the inevitable higher cost of any smaller follow-up order, it has been decided the club will place only one uniform order before Club Nationals.
So the deadline for the current order will be extended to midday this Friday, 25 February. Any additional orders must be received by email to rcc.feedback@xtra.co.nz by that deadline and the order payment deposited in the club’s Westpac account 03-0642-0976208-01. Please ensure your name is in the Particulars column and “Uniform” is in the reference column.
We’re confident most, if not all orders, have already been placed but are extending the order to include any late orders for whatever reason. We hope members can see that there now isn’t much sense in having a second order when it would have to be placed about 10 days from now to have a chance of being here before Nationals (and the cost will be significantly higher).
If anyone has any real difficulties with this decision please get back to us at rcc.feedback@xtra.co.nz.

Old RCC Uniform
There are a few jerseys which have been held in stock in shops. With the new uniform now available, our old colours become a curio and a sentimental investment. These will be sold from the trailer in coming weeks at $30 each.
Race Fees for Visitors
Saturday race fees for members will remain at $3.00 but from the start of the Autumn 2011 series (March), race fees for visitors will increase to $10 per race. If a person who has ridden as a visitor becomes a member they will not be charged a fee for their transponder.
Ultimo 2 Day Junior Tour, CHB
CHB Cycling host this event every year. RCC enjoys a close relationship with this club and often their members have supported us with marshals and drivers in events we have hosted. It would be fabulous if we could reciprocate.

Ride Out Of The Blue
On Saturday 5 March 2011, riders and their support crews will depart the Bluff to tackle a charity bike challenge, Ride Out of the Blue, over 27 days of gruelling riding covering 2,500 kilometres, including rest days - arriving in Cape Reinga on Thursday, 31 March.
Ride Out of the Blue will celebrate life, raise awareness for depression, and raise money for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.
