Crash mars qualifying effort for BikeNZ sprint team

Crash mars qualifying effort for BikeNZ sprint team

The New Zealand cycling sprint team crashed out during qualifying at the UCI World Cup in Cali today.

Former triple world junior champion Sam Webster crashed during the second lap of the team sprint after he rolled a tyre off the rim during the qualifying for the team sprint. Teammate Eddie Dawkins was left with no room to manoeuvre and crashed also. Webster received some grazing but was otherwise unhurt.

Unfortunately the team were not awarded a restart and are out of the competition with two teams from Germany recording the fastest times. The leading German team broke the world record in a time of 42.914, which was 35/100th of a second inside the old mark set by Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics.

New Zealand's starter Ethan Mitchell had the BikeNZ trio on a fast pace with the third quickest time for the first lap of 17.463s.

It has also been a mixed start for Shane Archbold in the men's omnium. He was third fastest in the flying lap in 13.173, which was another personal best after his 13.192 at last week's Oceania Championships.

He then suffered in the points race, losing two laps to finish 22nd. He is currently 10th after two events.

The evening sessions is set to start at 1pm (NZ time).

BikeNZ team pursuit cyclists into World Cup finals

New Zealand are through to the gold medal rides in both men's and women's team pursuit at the UCI World Cup in Cali, Colombia.

The women's team were the fastest in the heats of the 3000m team pursuit, while the men were second fastest behind world champions Australia.

Unusually the team pursuit time trials were run on the evening, with medals to be decided tomorrow night.

The women's trio of Alison Shanks, Jaime Nielsen and Lauren Ellis clocked 3:24.005 on a windy Cali Velodrome which is roofed but open to the elements on the sides.

New Zealand will ride off against Great Britain in the final tomorrow afternoon (NZ time) with the British boasting two of their world champion squad in the line-up.

World champion silver medallists USA, with two of their three riders back, will take on Lithuania for the bronze medal with the much vaunted Australian and Canadian teams missing out.

World champions Australia were the class of the field in the men's qualifying when they clocked 4:02.739 in the windy conditions. Their line-up included world pursuit champion Jack Bobridge and fellow world champions Rohan Dennis and Michael Hepburn in their squad.

The New Zealand quartet of Jesse Sergent, Sam Bewley, Marc Ryan and Aaron Gate were second fastest in 4:04.612, comfortably ahead of Colombia and Denmark who will fight it out for the bronze medal.

Tomorrow's first full day of competition includes the first day of the men's omnium, team sprint, men's kilo time trial and finals of the team pursuit.

Results, World Cup, Cali:

Team pursuit qualifying, men: Australia 4:02.739, 1; New Zealand 4:04.612, 2; Colombia 4:06.118, 3; Denmark 4:06.794, 4.

Next Thursday, 8th December, will be the first Swamp Road ITT.

Rider Behaviour and Protocol

A reminder that the Spring Series brought up several issues around club expectations of our members. Individuals and grades received warnings, disqualifications and sanctions for interferring in the race outcome for other grades; for behaviour in sprints; and for breaking NZ Road and RCC rules (such as crossing the white line).

Riders have had to be reminded about fundemental protocol such as using toilet facilities at our venues (rather than school or church grounds) or paying the full race fee in NZ money (rather than short-changing or using tokens and foreign coin).

We look forward to a Summer Series free of such behaviours with a focus what the club is fundementally about - safe and challenging Saturday racing.
