Big weekend for Ramblers at Taupo Track

Despite last weekend’s heat wave in Hawkes Bay, it rained medals for the Ramblers Cycling Club riders competing in the Wanganui Masters Games and the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Track Champs in Taupo.

The down pour started on Friday with Duncan McFadyen(70-75) and Bruce Galloway(50-55) both claiming top spots in their age grade 24km time-trials at the 2009 Masters Games. Seventy-five year old McFadyen, from Havelock North, blitzed the field as he took his time-trial title by more than two minutes from Ellis Goodyear from Wellington. This Ramblers’ stalwart has shown again that there is still a lot of racing left in him.
Galloway had to get a monkey off his back, as he crashed earlier in the week in the three day tour time-trial. This day nothing stood between the Napier master and his destiny, as he claimed gold in the race of truths.




The Masters Road Race was run on the Saturday from Brunswick on an undulating circuit. Again both the Ramblers’ masters had it their own way, McFadyen leaving his field behind to ride away solo to his second gold of the Games. For Galloway his second gold came after a hard fought battle with Wanganui local Pat Johnstone. Both riders took it to the line with Galloway claiming victory by the smallest of margins.

The overall comment about this magnificent event from McFadyen was that the Games atmosphere was like no other, with athletes from dozens of different codes mingling at the Village as the organizers put on daily entertainment that went on till late evening.

At Waitangi weekend the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Open Track champs were held at Taupo’s Velodrome in Arthur Dellany Sports Park. The competition was hot for the 13 riders representing the Ramblers Cycling Club, but the clouds burst with a total of 31 medals won.

The Central Hawkes Bay Town of Waipukurau has sprouted more potential track stars besides Olympian Westley Gough. During this three day long event, Sam Clarke and Regan Gough both from CHB, showed their wares on the bitumen oval.
Clarke kicked off the weekend with gold in the 500mtr time-trial ahead of Fraser Gough and a second place in the 200mtr sprint seeding round just ahead of Taradale’s Tim Lutter.

Regan Gough and Kerry Harford both dominated their age grade fields, winning all their events outright.

In the Under 17 Boys 5km Scratch race the Bay boys put on a great display of teamwork. From the gun they put up a barrage of attacks, shielding their escaped mates from persecution. During this offensive of epic proportion Duncan MacKenzie’s 2km dash for freedom made it all the way to the finish. As the Dartmoor son revelled in his glory he was quick to acknowledge all the work done by his club mates at the front-line.



With this ever growing team of cyclists, the long-term future of track cycling in Hawkes Bay looks to be in good hands. In the short-term, with the National Track Champs in Invercargill only three weeks away, time will tell if last weekend’s form is enough at national level.

Ramblers Riders "Enjoying" Tour De Vineyards

Ramblers riders are doing well after stage 2 at the Tour De Vineyards staged in Nelson. With two stages to go - Takaka Hill today and Hill street circuit tomorrow there is still a lot of racing before the GC contenders are determined but Ramblers riders currently lead in three GC Categories - Jeremy Yates 3 seconds ahead of Robin Reid in the open, Josh Page having a good event at 7th equal 26 seconds behind, Sean Joyce 10th under 19 rider. In the Womans event Serena Sheridan leads with 5 Seconds on Catherine Cheatley, Bridget Robertshawe on 6th at 5:50 and Kerry Harford enjoying his first race in the Masters 3 grade and continuing the good form from the 4050 tour leads 13 seconds up on Richie Howes.

Hastings Sunday Family Beach Ride January 4th

Hi All

The Hastings Sunday group programme has listed a family beach ride to Porangahau Beach. The distance is 110km's and we will go down Middle road, TeKura, Elsthorpe Road, Racecourse road to Waipawa then Highway 2 to Waipukurau turning off past the Heated pool to follow the CHB Tour route down to the beach (Tavistock road,Farm Road, Middleton Road, Porongahau Road, Blackhead Road, Hunter Road) . The idea is that families will drive down taking a picnic lunch, have a swim, play beach cricket etc and riders will make their way home by car. If it is blowing a gale or cold then we will do Camp David, Kahuranakei Loop also an option for those not interested in the picnic idea. Short distance can be Camp David return. Porangahau Beach is a sandy beach and reasonably safe for swimming, boogie boarding.

Serena Sheridan shines at ILT training Camp

Ramblers latest member, Serena Sheridan, just finished her first training camp at the ILT velodrome in Invercargill as part of the "Road to Gold" programme.  This BikeNZ iniative looks at athletes from outside our code, trying to find the next Allison Shanks, and give them a pathway to the 2012 London Olympics. 

Serena has been down south for the last 4 days, getting used to the fast wooden track and fixed gears.  Some of her teammates never seen a track or been on a fixie before, they have back grounds in basketball, rowing and athletics.

Serena impressed the selectors so much with her smooth style and track potential that's she has been invited to a second training camp in January.  Watch this space, an Olympic star in the making.

Kerry Harford continues to dominate 40-50's tour

Tour organiser Nathen, declared that the whole peloton must be working for Kerry who has managed to clean up most of the sprints and all of the finishes apart from the prologue. He may not be far wrong with the Magpie team chipping in to help Printshop with Neil Evans leading out many of the sprints. David Younquest had a strong stage 4 breaking away for 15km's and taking out his first stage sprint. Ian Fraser finished best of the Magpies after a 90km climb to St Arnaud with this years tail wind conditions producing some fast times (2:22:01). Stage 3 finished with lots of drama Steve Watson blowing a front tyre winding up to compete in the stage finish causing mayhem with a rider behind having lunch at the hospital but rejoining the race for the next stage.
Great food and scenery at the Nelson lakes area continues to make this an enjoyable tour to compete in.

Ramblers at 40-50's having a good Tour

End of 2nd day at the 40-50's tour based in Nelson has been a success for Ramblers Rider Kerry Harford (Riding for Printhouse)who missed out a little on the prologue but is making up for it in spades in the road racing winning both stages, all of the sprints, placing third equal in the hill climbing points and leads GC by 43 seconds(2:50:29) in the 40's grade.
Ron Pithie is only 4 seconds behind leading the 50's Grade.

The best of the other Ramblers riding for the Prophecy Magpies team Neil Evans is 14th 2:55:52 followed by Steve Watson 18th 2:56:57 and David Youngquest 19th 1 sec back.

Ian Fraser in the 50s grade 5th on their GC needs to work hard to follow up his third place of last year.

Tommorows stages are a fast and furious 30kms after a neutralised start up the hill out of Picton towards Renwick followed by a 95km steady climb to St Arnuad.

The Nathan Faavae run event is well organised with a great atmosphere accommodation and food supplied. For full results and stage details Click Here
