UCI TRACK CYCLING WORLD CUP – DAY 3 WRAP
Shanks finished less than a second behind Great Britain’s Joanna Rowsell in the final in front of a raucous sell-out and partisan home crowd at the Olympic Velodrome.
In doing so Shanks picked up the overall World Cup title for a second time after victory at the earlier round at Cali.
The Otago rider said the experience on the Olympic track and with the packed home crowd has been invaluable, although it has been challenging mentally with the endurance squad not tapering for this event.
“There’s an amazing atmosphere in here. The British have backed out the place and are so patriotic. In the final against Joanna, man they were loud,” said Shanks.
“We are all still getting use to the actual shape of the track and getting to grips with how to ride it.
“It’s been such a cool experience and I was absolutely stoked to be racing a Brit in the final.
“Obviously I desperately wanted to beat her but it was cool to be part of it and man the crowd was loud. It definitely gives you a real sense of what the Olympics will be like. It is going to be so exciting.
“It has been a different experience. We haven’t trained through a World Cup before so to be racing so flat and through a big training load is not easy on the head. But we have really looked at the big picture this year which is aimed at the World Championships in Melbourne and on to the Olympics.
“So London for us was about coming here to experience the track and get a feeling about what it is going to be like in August. The performance was not such an important thing this time.”
Shanks was nearly 1.5 seconds down at the 1km mark but caught up to be 0.4sec at the 2km but that was as close as she got, with Rowsall winning in 3:32.364 and Shanks second in 3:33.406.
Manawatu sprinter Simon van Velthooven continued his strong form to push through to the finals of the keirin.
Van Velthooven dominated his opening heat, moving into the lead and covering all challengers as he moved through to the semifinals where he finished comfortably in second place.
He pushed out strongly to grab the lead going into the final lap of the final but was swamped when challenged by Beijing gold medallist and home country hero, Sir Chris Hoy.
Fellow sprinter Natasha Hansen qualified seventh fastest in the women’s sprints in 11.282, just 0.3s behind Olympic champion and top qualifier Anna Meares (Australia). The Southland-based sprinter lost her round of eight clash against Australian Kaarle McCulloch, with a photo finish needed to separate the pair after Hansen attacked around the final bend and was a blink away from rolling over her opponent.
She lost to Spain’s Clara Sanchez in the B quarterfinal.
In the omnium battles, Timaru’s Shane Archbold finished 14th overall while Joanne Kiesanowski is 15th overall after her first day.
The World Cup finishes tomorrow at the London Olympic Velodrome.

UCI TRACK CYCLING WORLD CUP – DAY 2 WRAP
While both team sprint combinations just missed out on tonight’s medal round, they both established new best times at the Olympic Velodrome test event, while Manawatu’s Simon van Velthooven has taken out the overall World Cup title in the kilo time trial.
The 22 year old finished third in the time trial, clocking 1:02.048 in the event won by German Stefan Nimke in 1:01.211.
It was sufficient to give van Velthooven the overall World Cup honours ahead of Nimke following a second placing in Cali, victory at Beijing and third in the London test event. He was only 16th fastest in the opening lap but was the fastest in the field over the middle 500m and came home solidly.
“The aim was to get out on the track and get a feel for it,” van Velthooven said. “Every track is different and for sprinters especially the feel is really important.
“I would have liked to have gone faster. I felt I had a 1:01 in me but then again no-one was really able to smoke it out there.
“It’s great to have the World cup title but my focus now is on the hard work ahead for the World Championships and earn a place on the team for the Olympics.”
The men’s sprint trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins were fifth fastest in qualifying in 44.002s which broke the best time set at November’s Oceania championship’s and only 0.4sec from top qualifiers and world record holders, France and 0.15sec off the medal ride.
Mitchell produced a superb start lap of 17.601 which was faster than rivals Australia, which is encouraging as they look towards April’s world championships.
“Ethan took some time out of the Australians and both Sam and Eddie road strongly. They came very close to that medal ride and are improving every time they go out on the track,” said BikeNZ coach Mark Elliott. “If they can continue this progression, it will be exciting for them at April’s world championships in Melbourne.”
The fledgling women’s combination of Katie Schofield and Natasha Hansen took a significant 0.3sec off their best time at the Oceania Championships to be eighth fastest in the women’s team sprint. The pair clocked 33.861, the first time under the rarefied air of the 34 second barrier.
Australia were fastest in a new world record of 32,828, but importantly the Kiwi combination were significantly faster than key countries including Venezuela and Colombia as they chase Olympic qualification.
“It was another big step forward for the girls. They are doing everything asked of them. That ride should give them sufficient points to qualify for the world championships. If so they will need to improve again and finish ahead of their main rivals to earn qualifying points for the Olympics.”
Meanwhile Timaru’s Shane Archbold is 10th after the first day of the men’s omnium. He finished a promising sixth in the flying lap in 13.464, 16th in the points race and eighth in the elimination race.
Results:
Men’s Team Sprint qualifying: France 43.606, 1; Germany 43.650, 2; Australia 43.869, 3; Great Britain 43.869, 4. Also: New Zealand 44.002, 5.
Women’s team sprint qualifying: Australia 32.828, 1; Great Britain 32.966, 2; China 33.178, 3. Also: New Zealand 33.861, 8.
Kilo Time Trial: Stefan Nimke (GER) 1:01.211, 1; Michael D’Armeida (FRA) 1:02.036, 2; Simon van Velthooven (NZL) 1:02.048, 3.
Men’s Omnium, day 1, 250m flying lap: Zach Bell (CAN) 13.295, 1; Juan Aranjo (COL) 13.316, 2; Hao Liu (CHN) 13.425, 3. Also: Shane Archbold (NZL) 13.464, 6.
Points: Eloy Rovira (ESP) 61, Arango 41, 2; Luis Mansillo (CHN) 38, 3. Archbold 0, 16.

UCI TRACK CYCLING WORLD CUP – DAY 1 UPDATE
The men's team pursuit will ride off for the bronze medal after their qualifying ride at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in London.
However the women's team pursuit could only manage the sixth fastest in 3:25:468 in their first outing on the Olympic Velodrome, in a time well below expectation.
World champions Australia take on Beijing gold medallists Great Britain for the gold medal ride in the men's 4000m team pursuit, but unusually will have to wait until the final night of the programme on Monday (NZ time).
The New Zealand line-up, without star Jesse Sergent who is on duties for his professional road team, produced a solid performance in 4:04.218.
They take on Belgium in the bronze ride.
"The guys found the track very heavy tonight, so if you are slightly off the pace it is very difficult to pick things up," said BikeNZ men's coach Tim Carswell.
"For us it was a solid performance but not brilliant. We came here to try out some different combinations and to get into the medal ride and get another opportunity to race on the track, so we have achieved that."
Canada were the surprise pacesetters in the women's 3000m qualifying with a significant improvement on their previous best to clock 3:20.785 ahead of hosts Great Britain, while Australia and Netherlands ride off for the bronze medal.
BikeNZ women's coach Dayle Cheatley said the trio of Alison Shanks, Jaime Nielsen and Lauren Ellis were gutted about the effort.
"The team never got on the right pace from the start and could not bring it back in the second half," Cheatley said.
"They have been doing 3:25 pace regularly in training so this is really disappointing today. Everything indicated they were more than capable to ride the 3:20 pace that we had set.
"They were not overawed and seemed well prepared. The disappointing thing is that they won't get a second ride now and a further chance on the track."
The trio went through 1km point in 1:11.321, nearly two seconds behind pace-setters Great Britain, and 2:17.631 at the 2km mark in 2:17.631 with Great Britain and Canada fastest at 2:14.
The first full day of action begins tomorrow including women's competition in the team pursuit, team sprint and scratch race while the men will contest the points, team sprint, kilo and the first day of the Omnium.
Results:
Women's 3000m team pursuit qualifying: Canada 3:20.785, 1; Great Britain 3:21.370, 2; Australia 3:21.426, 3; Netherlands 3:22.776, 4; USA 3:23.208, 5; New Zealand (Lauren Ellis, Jaime Nielsen, Alison Shanks) 3:25.468, 6.
Men's 4000m team pursuit qualifying: Australia 3:57.885, 1; Great Britain 3:58.446, 2; New Zealand (Marc Ryan, Aaron Gate, Westley Gough, Sam Bewley) 4:04.218, 3; Belgium 4:06.596, 4.

Cyclists may experiment in London World Cup
New Zealand cyclists will look to experiment in their first competition on the new London Olympic Velodrome this week.
The BikeNZ men's team pursuit, without key rider Jesse Sergent, will likely take the opportunity to tinker with their riding order at this week's UCI World Cup in London.
In-form 21-year-old Aaron Gate has come of age over the last year and is likely to move to the strong-man role at number two as Beijing Olympian Sam Bewley rotates to Sergent's number four seat.
Waipukurau's Westley Gough comes into the quartet at number three leaving the experienced Marc Ryan in his usual starting spot.
"With Jesse away with his professional road team it is an opportunity to experiment a little," said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott.
"Our major focus is April's world championships in Melbourne as the key target before the final push to the London Olympics, so this represents our only real chance to look at some things a little.
"Roles within a team pursuit are vital with the No 2 and No 4 riders often taking the crucial bigger turns."
The men's team pursuit face an unusual schedule with qualifying on Friday morning (NZ time) but the medal ride for the top four teams is not until Monday.
"It's a pretty unusual situation. We presume it's driven by marketing for crowds but it's totally different to the usual programme where we would ride the qualifying in the morning and medal ride that night.
Elliott said the squad has settled well after working through jet lag although mildly surprised at the lack of precise finishing on the Olympic track.
"It is definitely not as smooth and well finished around the joints as we had expected and we have found the odd splinter in places. The riders said Invercargill took some time to bed-in so maybe that is the case here. But right now it's not as smooth as the veldrome track at Invercargill."
The men and women team pursuit qualifying is the only action on the opening session on Friday morning (NZ time) ahead of a full day of finals on Saturday comprising women's competition in the team pursuit, team sprint and scratch race while the men will contest the points, team sprint, kilo and the first day of the Omnium.
The omnium will feature Timaru's Shane Archbold, the world championship silver medallist, who has prepared for London with some arduous racing on the track around Europe, including more than 150km of racing at Copenhagen at one meet.
The BikeNZ team is:
Endurance, men: Marc Ryan (Timaru), Sam Bewley (Rotorua), Aaron Gate (Auckland), Westley Gough (Waipukurau), Shane Archbold (Timaru). Coach: Tim Carswell.
Women: Alison Shanks (Dunedin), Jaime Nielsen (Hamilton), Lauren Ellis (Hinds), Joanne Kiesanowski (Christchurch). Coach: Dayle Cheatley.
Sprint, men: Eddie Dawkins (Invercargill), Ethan Mitchell (Auckland), Sam Webster (Auckland), Simon van Velthooven (Palmerston North). Coach: Justin Grace.
Women: Natasha Hansen (Invercargill), Katie Schofield (Dunedin). Coach Stu MacDonald.
EVENT COVERAGE: An event wrap, image and audio will be sent on Friday through to Monday at approximately noon, with a short summary following qualifying sessions.

Westley earns spot in London World Cup cycling squad
Outstanding form at this week's national championships has led to the selection of six riders from New Zealand's burgeoning sprint programme in the 15-strong BikeNZ team for this month's UCI World Cup in London.
With three national records and four titles between then, Southland's Natasha Hansen and Dunedin's Katie Schofield have earned selection for their second World Cup as they push for qualification for the World Championships.
They will be joined by the successful young men's quartet of Eddie Dawkins (Southland), Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster (Auckland) and Simon van Velthooven (Palmerston North).
The squad also includes the men's and women's team pursuit along with omnium riders Joanne Kiesanowski (Christchurch) and Shane Archbold (Timaru).
"The women's sprint pair has continued to do everything we have asked of them," said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott. "They have demanded selection on form and they are on track if they continue to improve to qualify for the world championships. They have earned that chance.
"The bigger picture of the Olympics is a bit further down the road. We are treating the qualification process one step at a time and not getting too far ahead of ourselves."
The world championships is the next big aim for the BikeNZ team, and they will use the London World Cup as preparation towards April's worlds in Melbourne as well as test out the facilities in the official Olympic test event.
"We are definitely keying on the world championships at this stage. We obviously want to ride well in London but the whole focus is using this World Cup as a key preparation towards the world championships.
"And obviously it will be good to get a feel for the velodrome in London and just how everything lays out for not only the riders but the support staff."
Hawkes Bay rider Westley Gough, who rode strongly at last month's Beijing World Cup and at Invercargill this week, has won selection over national individual pursuit champion Peter Latham for the final spot in the men's pursuit quartet, replacing Jesse Sergent who is unavailable with his professional road team commitments.
Gough will join the Oceania winning trio of Sam Bewley, Marc Ryan and Aaron Gate, while the women's trio remains unchanged from the Cali World Cup winning combination of Alison
Shanks, Jaime Nielsen and Lauren Ellis.
The World Cup squad is expected to be enlarged for the world championships where the BikeNZ selectors are looking to compete in other non-Olympic disciplines.
The squad go into camp at Invercargill from today before travelling to London at the weekend.
The BikeNZ team for the London World Cup on 16-19 February is:
Endurance, men: Marc Ryan (Timaru), Sam Bewley (Rotorua), Aaron Gate (Auckland), Westley Gough (Waipukurau), Shane Archbold (Timaru). Coach: Tim Carswell.
Women: Alison Shanks (Dunedin), Jaime Nielsen (Hamilton), Lauren Ellis (Hinds), Joanne Kiesanowski (Christchurch). Coach: Dayle Cheatley.
Sprint, men: Eddie Dawkins (Invercargill), Ethan Mitchell (Auckland), Sam Webster (Auckland), Simon van Velthooven (Palmerston North). Coach: Justin Grace.
Women: Natasha Hansen (Invercargill), Katie Schofield (Dunedin). Coach Stu MacDonald.

Southland sprinters supreme at NZ cycling championships
Natasha Hansen continued to stake her claim for Olympic selection on the second night of the RaboDirect Track National Championships in Invercargill tonight.
Hansen defeated fellow Southlander Steph McKenzie in two straight rides to win the women's sprint national title after smashing the New Zealand 200m time trial record in qualifying this morning.
The men's sprint final was a more closely fought affair with local Southland hero Eddie Dawkins regaining his best form to beat fellow BikeNZ squad member and former triple world junior champion Sam Webster (Auckland) in a third ride, after they split the first two.
Hansen, the former Christchurch rider now living in Invercargill, was delighted with her continued improving form.
"I was really pleased with my national record, but I guess in sprint racing anything can happen and you can't underestimate anyone no matter what their qualifying speed was," Hansen said.
"The record did give me a slight confidence boost but I think the main buzz I was on was just from going fast. You can't take anyone lightly out there," said Hansen.
Hansen, who has her sights set on the London Olympics, set a new national record of 11.219 in the 200 metre sprint qualifying this morning, adding it to the 500 metre time trial national record she last night.
"New Zealand has not had a female sprint programme so now that we have got one with three of us on the programme we have come along in leaps and bounds as we are all pushing each other along and making us go faster and faster."
Katie Schofield (Otago), the third member of the women's high performance sprint programme narrowly missed making the sprint final but easily defeated former world downhill mountain bike world champion Vanessa Quin (Auckland) to take the bronze medal.
Dawkins led the way in qualifying with a 10:169s effort, a whisker outside the national record, with fellow Southlander Matt Archibald second fastest ahead of Webster.
Dawkins, Archibald, Webster and fellow BikeNZ squad rider Ethan Mitchell fought their way into the semifinals.
The big Southlander accounted for Mitchell (Auckland) in two straight rides to progress to the final while Webster was pushed by Archibald but also went through in two rides.
It proved an outstanding result for Dawkins, who struggled for his best form at the Oceania Championships prior to Christmas.
"Sam is really the leading force in matched sprinting in New Zealand and it was good to get one up on him, but it's also developing our whole team," said Dawkins.
"My sprint qualifying today was the fastest I have gone since 2009. I've been in a bit of a lull – I've been surprised that the team has kept me around. But I'm glad I'm on the way up again and in the right year."
Southland local Tom Scully caused an upset in the points race when he beat Beijing Olympians Westley Gough (Waipukurau) and Marc Ryan (Timaru) for the title. It was a tight race decided on the final sprint which was won by Gough. However Ryan was relegated for an infraction in the final sprint which promoted Scully, giving him the bonus point needed to steal the title from Gough.
It completed an remarkable comeback from Scully, who had several months out of the sport after a serious racing accident in Ireland in 2010.
Commonwealth Games medallist Joanne Kiesanowski (Canterbury) rode an exemplary points race to secure herself the national title. The country's leading omnium rider featured in each sprint, winning by an 11 point margin ahead of Rushlee Buchanan (Waikato Bay of Plenty) and Sequoia Cooper (Southland).
Youngsters Alysha Keith (Otago) and Dylan Kennett (Canterbury) put their hands up for selection to next year's Junior World Championships to be staged at Invercargill after convincing wins in the under 19 omnium.
Kennett won all but the points race in the six event series, to finish with a whopping 12 point margin over Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu) with Hamish Schreurs (Christchurch) third.
Keith never slipped below a second place in any of her six events, finishing nine points ahead of Cassie Cameron (Wanganui) and Auckland's Racquel Sheath.
The RaboDirect Elite Track National Championships conclude tomorrow.

BikeNZ trio keep dreams alive with national cycling titles
Three BikeNZ riders pushed their claims for international selection with strong performances on the opening night of the RaboDirect Track National Championships in Invercargill.
The Waikato Bay of Plenty pair of Peter Latham and Kaytee Boyd along with Southland-based Natasha Hansen put their hands up for the upcoming UCI World Cup in London and the World Championships with impressive wins tonight.
Waikato’s Peter Latham won the men’s 4000m individual pursuit title after beating off the challenge from fellow Beijing Olympic squad member Westley Gough (Waipukurau) in a vital showdown as selectors look to fill the vacant spot in the team pursuit for the London World Cup later this month.
“Any national title is nice to win and I’m pretty satisfied to come through with a good ride tonight,” said Latham.
“We had a good campaign in Beijing at the World Cup a few weeks ago. I made the most of the opportunity to ride the team pursuit there and wanted to back that up tonight with a good ride.
“The event the whole team is targeting is the world championships in April in Melbourne. Whether they take me to London in a few weeks or they send me home to train for a weeks, I will just go where I am told.”
Latham is one eight team pursuit riders vying for the four Olympic team pursuit spots.
“There’s a lot of hungry guys. It’s a pretty good position for BikeNZ to be in. It makes the competition between all of the fellas pretty tight. We just want to make the team go faster.”
Latham topped the qualifiers in 4:21.730 just ahead of Gough’s 4.22.065. The Waikato man was able to repeat that effort with a 4:21.975 in the final, taking control in the second half of the 4000m battle.
Meanwhile Boyd was the best of the women in the 3000m individual pursuit, taking the national title ahead of teammate Rushlee Buchanan.
Both Boyd and Buchanan have been part of the BikeNZ team pursuit squad at world championship level and are also battling for a spot going forward.
“Individual pursuits are always a tough ride, but I was confident in myself. It wasn’t really about the title tonight, it was about doing a good ride,” said Boyd.
“I’m feeling better all of the time. The conditions aren’t too cold which is really helpful. The bikes we have are amazing, These new Avantis are great and I am pretty rapt with them.
“I find individual pursuit a real mental challenge but I think I am getting better at them slowly. It seems so simple but you have to think the whole way through. You have to slowly release the energy.”
Boyd was top qualifier in 3.41.251 for the 3000m with Buchanan nearly 1.5 seconds back. But in a massive battle of two international riders, Boyd pipped Buchanan by just 3/1000th of a second in a tremendous race.
Two young riders announced their arrival in the elite ranks with junior worlds medallist Georgia Williams (Auckland) taking the bronze medal ahead of Southland’s Sequoia Cooper and Alex Frame (Canterbury) having a stunning race to catch rival Cameron Karwowski (Southland) in the ride for the bronze medal in the men.
Invercargill-based Hansen, formerly from Christchurch, reinforced hopes that the burgeoning women’s sprint programme has a strong future when she decimated the 500 metre time trial national record. Hansen set a new time of 34.915, with her New Zealand representative team sprint partner Katie Schofield (Otago) also eclipsing the current record and securing herself the silver medal.
The pair are making a late push for Olympic qualification and hope to be selected for the London World Cup, which offers a further chance towards their Olympic dream.
Earlier in the night Hansen partnered teenager Stephanie McKenzie (Southland) to win the women’s team sprint, finishing just a blink off the national record.
BikeNZ riders Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Simon van Velthooven (Auckland) were too strong for their Southland rivals in the team sprint final. The trio rode a 44.268 to narrowly miss the national record by 3/10ths of a second, taking the title ahead of the Southland trio of Regan Sheath, Matt Archibald and Eddie Dawkins.
Dylan Kennett (Canterbury) has indicate he has the consistency needed to excel in the Omnium after three podium placings in the first events giving him an early nine point lead ahead of Hayden McCormick (Waikato Bay of Plenty) in the under 19 men’s omnium.
Alysha Keith (Otago) leads the under 19 women’s Omnium after three events. Keith won the flying lap and the points race and placed to establish a three point lead ahead of Cassie Cameron (Wanganui).
The championships continues until Monday.

Much at stake for riders in RaboDirect NZ Track Cycling Championships
There’s plenty at stake for New Zealand’s leading track cyclists at the RaboDirect New Zealand Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill this weekend.
The championships, starting at the Cycling Southland Velodrome on Saturday, form another important part of the season’s programme ultimately leading through to the London Olympics.
The BikeNZ selectors face a daunting task and some tough decisions as they fine-tune teams initially for this month’s World Cup in London, the world championships in Melbourne in April and finally the Olympics.
“There are some selections still to be made for the World Cup and of course long term we have to work around the IOC limitations on team numbers for London which is quite complex,” said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott.
“In between that is an important world championship in Melbourne in April – doubly important because it is very rare to have this event in the southern hemisphere.
“It will be an important litmus test for our Olympic preparations. Importantly it has a full schedule of events including non-Olympic disciplines and is a gilt-edged opportunity for us to take a full squad of riders with an eye to the future.
“That’s something we have been unable to contemplate when the championships are in Europe.
“It is a world championship in its own right and hopefully it can spark not only really important success for our riders but spark the sport, very much in the same way it did for rowing last year.”
The key squad of sprinters will all be competing at the championships with a further chance for the women’s pair of Natasha Hansen and Katie Schofield to impress for inclusion in the London World Cup as they keep alive their late bid for Olympic selection.
The men will resume their battles and hope to press their Olympic claims to include all four leading lights in Simon van Velthooven (Palmerston North), Eddie Dawkins (Invercargill) and Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell (both Auckland).
Some of the BikeNZ endurance squad riders won’t be racing with Jesse Sergent having joined his RadioShack Nissan Trek World Tour team while omnium rider Shane Archbold is competing in Europe as a lead-in to the London World Cup.
Sergent’s spot for the London World Cup is up for grabs along with significant opportunities for riders to push claims for wider selection to April’s World Championships and on to the Olympics. The depth in the endurance group is significant including Beijing Olympic medallist Westley Gough, fellow squad member Peter Latham and under-23 tyro Myron Simpson.
There will also be interest in the form of Southland’s Tom Scully, recently resigned in Chipolte First Solar, the under-23 development team of World Tour team Garmin Barracuda. Scully has worked his way back from major career-threatening injuries after a crash during The RAS Tour of Ireland in 2010 which cost him a spot in the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The favoured women’s endurance trio of Alison Shanks, Lauren Ellis and Jaime Nielsen will be in camp but not competing, while three members of the men’s team pursuit squad - Sam Bewley, Aaron Gate and Marc Ryan - will bypass the pursuit but will compete in a range of other events.
There will be as-live coverage on Cycling Southland’s site www.cyclingsouth.co.nz and full wraps and results on www.bikenz.org.nz.

BikeNZ coach heads to new cycling role with world body
BikeNZ national coach Tim Carswell is to take up a new position after the London Olympics based at the home of the sport’s ruling body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
Carswell will coach at the UCI World Cycling Centre at its headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland, becoming the first New Zealander to earn a paid role with the organisation.
The BikeNZ men’s track coach said he and his family will move to Switzerland following the Olympics in August, with the early announcement of his departure timed to ensure it is not a distraction to the New Zealand team during the important months ahead.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity and we are certainly looking forward to it.” said Carswell. “At the same time right now all my attention is on our preparations for the world championship and the Olympic campaigns.”
The UCI established the World Cycling Centre in 2002 with the aim of detecting and training the most promising athletes so that they reach international level, along with coaches.
As well as providing direction for developing cycling nations as an Olympic training centre, it has also provides an ideal base for nurturing the skills of outstanding cycling prospects.
“We have used the centre for a number of our Olympic and World Championship medallists, with Jesse Sergent, Westley Gough, Shane Archbold, Rushlee Buchanan and Lauren Ellis all going through the Centre as young riders,” said Carswell.
More recently the BikeNZ senior and junior squads have trained in Aigle, as have the national BMX squad.
Carswell’s elevation is seen as recognition of the development programme of both riders and coaches within BikeNZ.
“We are thrilled for Tim. He has been a key component of our success over the last five years,” said BikeNZ High Performance Director, Mark Elliott.
“Tim has played a vital role in our development of world class riders. He has also played a significant role in growing and developing our young staff to ensure we have the skills across the track programme to continue our success into the next Olympic cycle.
“BikeNZ have been able to utilise the UCI facility for several years and they have no doubt seen Tim in action close at hand and also been impressed with the success he has enjoyed with the development of our track programme from such a small nation so far from the cycling stronghold of Europe.”
Carswell said the time was right for him to move on.
“I came in to the role in 2007 and this is my second Olympic campaign. We have come a long way in that time, not only with the development of our riders but also the number of excellent support staff we now have.
“So I know there’s an excellent succession programme in place and some great people ready to take more responsibility.
Carswell, 40, is a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist as a rider with half of New Zealand’s four Olympic track medals earned under his guidance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His wife Fiona is also a former Olympian.
In the meantime it is work as usual for Carswell who is at Invercargill for the national track championships before a training camp for the BikeNZ team heading to this month’s London World Cup.
