Member response to the recent logo questionnaire was appreciated but less than ideal in helping the committee decide between the logo concepts. Around 25% of members responded. The communications sub-committee and designers feel strongly that Logo A is the best option to take the club forward. One important aspect we have become aware was that there was no opportunity to meet members face to face and explain the relative strengths of the logo concepts.
It has also been commented on that it is asking a lot of people to expect them to visualise how a logo might be used without giving an example.
Su Daniel from No9 Marketing and Design will present two indicative jersey concepts incorporating logos A and C before the race at Bridge Pa on 2 October.
Note: These are not the final jersey designs but do indicate where the jersey designs will head depending on which logo design is adopted.
Please come early to the race as racing will start only when voting has been completed. Su Daniel will present concepts at 1.40pm followed by voting at 1.45pm. Race briefing will be just prior to the presentation and you will have time to warm up before the race starts.
If you are not at Bridge Pa on 2 October you will be able to access the designs on line at www.ramblers.co.nz\files\concepts.pdf from Monday 4 October. Voting closes on Friday 8 October. When you have viewed them you can cast your vote by emailing rcc.feedback@xtra.co.nz

Strong Showing by Ramblers at Wanganui GP
On Saturday the 4th of September a group of Ramblers members travelled down to Wanganui for the Wanganui GP. After an early morning wake up of 4:30am we got on the road to arrive in Wanganui just over an hour before the U17 start. When we arrived in Wanganui we were met by a sunny but cold and windy weather.
The course was the Nationals course for 2011 and it consisted of a 22km lap, much of which was either up or down. U17 completed 2 of the 22km laps which included 3 climbs all of which about the same length but different gradients.
The start of the race wasn’t unusual for U17 where it starts off fast. Everything stayed together until the second climb of the first lap (about 15km into it) where a break of 2 got up the road and with everyone except the 3 Ramblers riders Lance Welch, Mike Garrity and James Lochhead dropping. So it was left to us 3 to chase the break which had the race favourite in it. After a hard 15-16km chasing we caught them only to find Jacob (race favourite) smiling at us… We rotated until the start of the same hill they got away on the previous lap, and this again proved to be the challenging one. Jacob lifted the pace and Mike and Lance were able to hold on except James couldn’t quite keep contact after the work he’d done in the chase. Everything stayed together until the last climb 4km from the end where Jacob showed his dominance and got away. The sprint came and Mike Garrity had it in him to take 2nd from Vladimir 3rd and Lance 4th. James finished 5th, 45secs behind.
Other ramblers riders competing were Kerry Harford in B grade. Kerry had an awesome race and soloed the last 15km only to be caught 200m from the line by the fast peleton, but still managing to hold on for 5th!
And Fraser Gough rode in the large A grade field. Fraser looked comfortable in the A grade bunch except pulled out on the last lap.
(Thanks James - ed)

Club Race Grading
You may have noticed in the new race programme that the G Grade race distances have been increased to match F Grade. This is because in the last series G grade had very few riders, while E and F had some large fields.
Accordingly for the Spring series, the committee have decided that G Grade will become a full racing grade and some riders will be re-graded amongst these three grades.
This is not intended to be a reflection on anyone’s abilities, but simply a way of keeping rider numbers even throughout these grades, and hopefully keeping racing safe.

Velodrome Bid Launched: Excerpts from Media Release (Monday 30 August 2010)
The region formally launched its bid to be the home of the North Island’s only indoor cycling velodrome today. The Unison Velodrome will be sited at the regional Sports Park. Several regions have expressed interest and SPARC is managing the process to determine which region is best suited to provide the facility. Only one region will receive government funding.
“Today we are officially lodging our expression of interest,” says Sports Park Trust Chair Lawrence Yule. “The decision making process is lengthy and won’t be concluded until April 2011,” he says.
The region is home to New Zealand’s second and fourth largest road cycling clubs (Ramblers and CHB cycling) and Hawke’s Bay Mountain Biking is easily the largest in New Zealand. The region’s bid has received strong endorsement from its local authorities including $2.5million from the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.
Regional Council Chair Alan Dick said his Council’s contribution was a good investment. “The velodrome will attract people from all over the North Island and is a major asset for Hawke’s Bay,” he says. Hastings District Council, which is the Sports Park’s main funder, is contributing $1.79m to the velodrome. It is anticipated the velodrome will have a $15m plus price tag.
Approximately two thirds of this funding is coming from non-ratepayer sources including central government and funds raised by the Sports Park Trust.

“Today we are officially lodging our expression of interest,” says Sports Park Trust Chair Lawrence Yule. “The decision making process is lengthy and won’t be concluded until April 2011,” he says.
